ST. PETERSBURG, Florida- Robert VanConett just wanted to make an honest living working the late night shift at the 7-Eleven on 34th Street North in St. Petersburg. He became increasingly concerned for his safety however, after a series of armed robberies over his six years with the company.

Employer Policies Toward Guns and the Risk of Homicide in the Workplace

Businesses have a right to establish no-gun policies on conduct in the workplace, and also establish such policies so as to protect themselves from the increased costs of litigation consequent to an employee being killed on the job, especially when there is proof that the employee, him/herself, is safer when complying with the policy than when violating it.

The corporation would rather have the clerk dead, than the armed robber. Workman's comp for "workplace violence" is cheaper than what their CS lawyers see the shakedown for a dead criminal.

And the employee has the right to defend his life.

Would it had been acceptable to you if the man had ben killed?

You can't work there anyway unless you have a slight Indian accent, according to Vice President Biden.

Clearly that's wrong. If that were the case, the research indicates that they'd be better off requiring the clerk to have a gun.

How about not requiring a gun, but allowing the clerk to choose to be armed if they feel that their life is threatened?

How about not making the clerk be unemployed just because he had the temerity to defend himself?

But you're a conservative. You guys believe that business rights trump individuals' rights every time, no questions asked. You believe that employees should be kept in their places and be subservient at all times no matter how disgusting a business treats them. Isn't that right? Now you're changing your tune because the clerk defended himself with a gun???

For the record I support the clerk.

Clearly, right-winger gun-loving rhetoric trumps right-winger pro-corporate-person rhetoric. The key is to not discuss both issues at once, since that requires nuanced perspectives, and nuanced perspectives are an anathema to the right-wing establishment.

Threads like this are useful, though, for providing a way of differentiating right-wingers into those who are consistent in their perspectives and those that aren't. The most interesting posts in this thread will be those where right-wingers disagree with each other.
