Interesting investigative report by a Houston station. Of course this isn't the first time that the police department records have come into question. I wonder how many other police departments hide or mis-label crimes for purposes of making their departments look like they're really doing something?

they do it here i know.
homocide is a major crime i dont think those get relabeled much but definitely burglaries assaults rape robbery stats get relabeled. here authorities have been called out on it more than once. tweaking the stats i am sure is widespread. government agencies in general get pressured to show evidence of their good performance and to "reevaluate" their statistics to the "correct" appearance. if you have personal experience with this stuff and know others that do too, to assume that it is only going on here locally is pretty naive.
interesting when i posted a similar view on another thread some posters had a strong reaction that i would even suggest such a thing, citing certain law enforcemenet agencies as near infallable sources of accurate statistics. not so.
good post you have pointed out an obvious point. if the local government agencies tweak the data then higher authority agencies will only be repeating the inaccuracies.
