Tomatoes belong to the genus Lycopersicon, which is in the same family, Solanaceae, as potatoes. The resemblance betwixt leaves and flowers of potato and tomato plants seems to validate this taxonomic grouping. Two members of the genus Solanum (the genus which potato is classified in) have been successfully hybridized with members of the Lycopersicon genus [4]. These are S. lycopersicoides and S. pennellii. Wild tomato species have tiny fruits, and only the red ones are edible. Tomato plants do not tolerate frost, and grow as annuals in colder regions. In warmer regions, they are perennial, and flower regardless of day length.
Where did the tomato come from? For more than a century, tomatoes have been grown in gardens from Kazakstan to California, and in many locales cultivation of the red fruit goes back centuries. Pinpointing where it all began is not always easy. Vavilov was a renowned Russian scientist who conceived the idea that if one wants to locate the very center of origin for any crop species, look for the area which still has the highest diversity of that crop . This is grounded on the idea that only a portion of the wild plant gene pool will be incorporated into a domesticated plant line, such that the cultivated crop will represent only a portion of the genetic variety found in the wild ancestors which presumably are still inhabiting the area, in more or less the same form, to this day. By that logic, one would look closely at the western coast of South America, in present day Peru, where eight species in the tomato genus still grow wild in the Andes Mountains.
Domesticated tomatoes can be up to 1000 times larger than their wild relatives. How did they get so big? In general, domesticated food plants have larger fruits, heads of grain, tubers, etc, because this is one of the characteristics that early hunter-gatherers chose when foraging for food. In addition to size, tomatoes have been bred for shape, texture, flavor, shelf-life, and nutrient composition, but it has been difficult to study these traits in tomatoes, because many of them are the result of many genes acting together. These genes are often located in close proximity on chromosomal regions called loci, and regions with groups of genes that influence a particular trait are called quantitative trait loci (QTLs). When a trait is influenced by one gene, it is much simpler to study, but quantitative traits, like skin and eye color in humans or fruit size in tomatoes, cannot be easily defined just by crossing different individuals. Now, with genome sequencing and genomics tools, chromosomal regions with QTLs can be mapped and cloned more easily than in the past. These genomic maps can also be compared across plant genomes to identify similar genes in other species. With this knowledge, breeders can improve tomato varieties as well as other less well known food plants in the family Solanaceae.
Many heirloom cultivars have colorful histories as well. Consider the story regarding the cultivar Mortgage Lifter. A West Virginian named Charlie owned a radiator repair shop that fell on hard times in the Great Depression as people abandoned their cars. He used the four largest-fruited tomato plants he had and crossed them repeatedly among each other to create a plant that produced two pound fruits. He sold plants for a dollar each, claiming one plant would feed a family of six. Within four years, he had made enough money to pay off the four thousand dollar mortgage on his house.
Those of you who think splicing RoundUp into food plants is ok then you'll probably be ok when they start splicing stronger chemicals because the RoundUp isn't working anymore.

How does posting a link showing that Amish kids that grow up on organic farms drinking raw milk have some of the lowest rates of allergies prove anything in your favor? If anything, you are proving HappyTexans point that the huge increase in allergies is only occuring in the segment of the population that eats all the crap GMO, processed and fake food.

I don't know how many times I have to explain this, but it's not so much about the genetically engineered food (which I still don't feel has been proven to be safe but I digress) but it is the fact that these very few multi-national corporations have so much control on our food systems and only want more and more-not for humanities sake but for more profit-only an imbecile would think otherwise. They want to own the seeds and own the food. They patent the seeds and sue farmers whose farms were easily contaminated.
I am all about localization-that is the way food should be-fresh food is the best food. Community herb and vegetable gardens, personal gardens-we've lost our way and need to be able to sustain ourselves without destroying the Earth via pesticides and Big Agriculture.
It's amazing that you've managed to see this as a left/right issue when there are massive protests against Monsanto and GMO all over the World and many countries have outright banned GMO's. Here in Amurica we simply appoint Monsanto goons to be the Senior Advisor at The FDA.

From the USA Today link: The Washington initiative was part of an ongoing national fight by those opposed to genetically engineered crops to push for labeling. A similar,bruising $37 million battle in California in 2012 went against labeling advocates. The final vote was 51.4% opposed and 48.6% in favor.
"Sooner or later, one of these is going to pass. It's only a matter of time. At some point the industry is going to get tired of pouring this kind of money into these campaigns," said Marion Nestle, a professor of nutrition at New York University.
She said she doesn't believe there's anything dangerous about genetically engineered foods but is concerned about corporate control of the food supply.
So these people are going to cause hundreds of millions to be spent over this labeling agenda, and the people behind it all, like Marion Nestle, says they're not doing this because there is anything dangerous about GMO foods; they just doesn't like corporations?
