I couldn't imagine not working. I wouldn't bother working more than 40 hours a week and might be more insistant on when I'm off, but otherwise yeah, I'd still work. What else am I gonna do with my time?
I couldn't even pay rent with $1500/mo, so I'd have no choice but to keep working!
And by "guaranteed income," I'm guessing you mean from something other than work? I was on unemployment for a few months back in 2010, and received the maximum of $1900/mo... it was nice for a few weeks, but got pretty boring and depressing after that. Plus, that kind of money doesn't go very far in this area.
The taxes it would take to guarantee all you deadbeats $1500 per month would make working not worth it.
The scheme would end within 6 months.
You really dont understand it do you?
Sooo go ahead, quit and BE A DEADBEAT. The rest of us-and in fact the majority of us wouldn't. And...many of the current deadbeats would start working.
What does that make you? Yeah. PS-enjoy making $1,500 a month. In the meantime, people making minimum wage will take home about 2,300 a month.
The taxes it would take, I've seen varying estimates. At a guess....we would have to have to double the tax rate. The effect-well for 70% they would make the same or more after the tax and then adding the guarenteed income.... For another 20% it would be a mild loss, and for 10% it would be a bit more painful.
More interesting is that for EVERYONE but the completely unemployed, it would suddenly matter about how we spend taxes.
I was thinking their rent is quite reasonable, even cheap - considering I pay about $1610/mo for a one-bedroom apartment! But as the old saying goes, you get what you pay for (or the other old saying, it's expensive for a reason). So I'm not looking to move, since most of the cheap places around the US couldn't hold a candle to the Bay Area IMO.
Not to mention, my salary is about 30-40% higher here than it would be (for the same job) elsewhere.

Haha, exactly my thoughts. My rent might seem crazy to an "outsider," but around here it's considered a great deal!
$1500 a month? I make more than that now and it isn't enough. Hell, I'd keep working even if I won a cool million in a lottery jackpot. I'd have to!
