It does not apply, because only a small fraction of the population are drug addicts (thank goodness), and therefore the market is small. It applied to alcohol because majority of the population consumed alcohol, which made the market much bigger.
About 20% of our 300 million people smoke pot regularly.
Sorry, that's a major percentage. Much higher then gay marriage. See how that's taking off? It's why pot legalization efforts are moving so fast now

Very true. It definitely has increased in popularity and acceptance. I can go to any social function (with maybe the exception of certain immediate family) and someone always has it, as well as there are many of those who are willing to partake. Those nations with the least drug problems, have no tolerance and impose the strongest consequences. Public hanging serves as incentive for the masses to avoid drugs and people who buy or sell them. Nations that choose to impose the harshest consequences, do not spend a lot of money on police, court systems or prisons.

If only the impact could be limited to the people who use. Unfortunately, many have a tendency to get behind the wheel and use their cars and trucks to injure and/or kill other people.
They have a tendency to steal anything not nailed down from their employers ( to the extent they can hold a job), retail, their friends and family.
They lie. They cheat. They steal.
There's an old saying about how either an alcoholic or a drug addict will take your wallet. The difference is the drug addict is more likely to help you look for it.
