Feds announce test sites for drone aircraft
The Federal Aviation Administration announced six states on Monday that will develop test sites for drones, a critical next step for the march of the unmanned aircraft into U.S. skies.

Alaska, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Texas and Virginia will host the research sites, providing diverse climates, geography and air traffic environments, FAA Administrator Michael Huerta said.

And each state has several sites within the state.
I found that Texas will have 11 drone test sites.

Texas Selected For Drone Tests; One Site Is In Central Texas
The 11 Texas test sites are south of Fort Stockton, south of Fort Hood, outside College Station and several in South Texas outside Beeville and south of Corpus Christi.

Looks like most of the conservative states and one liberal state are happy to get these new government contracts.

Well we all know red states are always there with their hands out when it comes to handing out government money.

Only 24 states submitted plans.
The FAA said they picked them based on geography, not political affiliation.

You have links saying otherwise ?

WTH? Oregons got a thriving R&D effort on drones. And we have a large variety of geographic features. Very disappointing.

I am sure they selected based on geography, but those states didn't have to apply for it if they were against drone testing in their state, but it seems the red states love the idea of having drone testing in their state.

Oregon didn't submit themselves to the FAA.

The 6 lucky states that’ll shape the future of drone technology
But Hawaii, Oregon and New Jersey chose not to submit their own applications.
