If Religion ceased to exist today....all the people on CD who have made an agenda to negate it would realize a much harsher reality.
NATURAL SELECTION WILL TAKE CARE OF IT ALL FOR YOU
Natural Selection has been defeated by government mandated programs.
NFPA, OSHA, etc. all work to keep stupid people alive to further pollute the gene pool...........

You're right...
I was waiting for someone to come in with the argument "Religion keeps people scientifically ignorant"
No, government does a MUCH more efficient job of that.

A much harsher reality than what? Killing millions in a concentration camp? Hundreds of millions of dead in wars? Slave trade? Eradication of millions of Indians? A Middle East that's perpetually at some kind of war?
Please. To act as if religion has been some sort of check on mankind's worse excesses is a joke. If anything, it's been an agent to make the already bad into the much worse.
About the best thing you can say about religion is that if doesn't make things worse, it's usually a dispassionate bystander when bad things happen. It rarely if ever takes a stand against evil unless religion itself is threatened...and even then it acts only because of fiduciary purposes and not morality.
Moreover, if the only purpose of religion is to mitigate mankind's bent towards nihilism, that's a p*ss poor reason to believe in it and says a lot about religion itself. You're supposed to believe in the stuff because it's true...not because WITHOUT it you'd slice babies in half.
If that's the case, then being made in God's image doesn't say a whole lot for God...does it?

Unless you can make a compelling argument that these would not have happened in the absence of Religion....then I don't know why you would attribute these events to it anyway.

That is exactly my point...
But...can you say that about government?

I, in no way, advocated Religion. We don't NEED it. All I am illustrating is that those who rail against it like it is the single biggest issue regarding progress....are VERY misled and cannot see the forest for the trees.

I would have you take a look at the accomplishments of the Catholic Church. Through various catholic charities they have fed and clothed millions every year. Catholic Hospitals treat the sick by the millions, often without reimbursement. The Catholic Church is the biggest defender of human rights. Actually the world would be a much much worse place if not for the good old catholic church.
I wish there was MORE religion in society. Way too many people don't let God into their lives and it shows by the amount of illegitimate babies, divorces and infidelity that occurs in society. I pay more for welfare because of some welfare queen who didn't let God in her life. There is more crime caused by gangbangers who were raised by moms who didn't believe in God and they are usually fatherless because the parents didn't let God in their life.
