I would love to see all subsidies and foreign aid cut, keeping disaster aid intact, as well as all congressional perks eliminated.

shut down the US export-import bank, AKA "Boeing's Bank," a bastion of corporate welfare. Ostensibly the money it gets from taxpayers is supposed to help US exports, and in turn vouchsafe well-paying US jobs.

How is that working out for you, machinist's union? All that money you paid in federal taxes over the years, and the benefits all go to the pockets of the execs. Meanwhile Pres. Obama, who your union helped elect, looks on, smiles, and works to expand the Ex-im bank.

The EPA doesn't need to be shut down but does need to be reigned in.
Public broadcasting is redundant in this age of 24/7 cable networks, web logs, and pushbutton publications. Anyone can be a newspaper, a broadcaster, an informer, and the free flow of ideas will continue without the PBS.
The Departments of education and energy don't produce energy or education. We keep losing ground against other countries in both areas, our educational system is dismal despite spending more per student every year.
HUD has partly been responsible for the economic near collapse we suffered by encouraging and underwriting the risky loans in an attempt to get everyone into a house. They also, through section 8 housing, cause rents to rise for those who aren't eligible by setting an artificially high rent as a basis for their subsidies. It's good to be a slumlord and a section 8 fatcat.

What this country needs is to start judging the cabinet departments on results, not just good intentions.

Department of Education - Goes without saying. Education is the great fear of the modern day conservative. Much better to believe Jesus rode a dinosaur through Israel preaching the dangers of socialized medicine.

EPA - We all know that clean air and water is a job killer! Why must corporations be penalized?

Housing and Urban Development - Yea, it's those damn minorities who benefit from this department. Close it!

Labor's Center for Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships (DOL) I dont even know what this is, but it sounds like something that might advocate a living wage/job training amongst the working poor. It has got to go!

Corporation for Public Broadcasting - How DARE tax dollars fund something that works to educate Americans! If you don't understand why this must go, you must be one of those edumucated types, and ya wuddn't understand anyhow!

Red Herring Fallacy

Quote:
Red Herring: This is a diversionary tactic that avoids the key issues, often by avoiding opposing arguments rather than addressing them. Example:
The level of mercury in seafood may be unsafe, but what will fishers do to support their families?

In this example, the author switches the discussion away from the safety of the food and talks instead about an economic issue, the livelihood of those catching fish. While one issue may affect the other it does not mean we should ignore possible safety issues because of possible economic consequences to a few individuals.
Notice how the poster diverts from the debate of whether we need a Federal Department of Education to a debate of whether we should have education in general. Note that Canada has no national dept of ed. It is done at the provincial level only. And they get much better results than we do, as shown by their PISA scores.

Since the Department of Education -- students in the USA are fast falling behind their peers in other countries.

Since Housing and Urban Development we have seen the urban decay and even whole cities like Detroit become blighted ghettos.

The Public Broadcasting is just a liberal mouthpiece that presents only the liberal viewpoint.

EPA just makes it impossible for factories in the US to compete with those in China which aren't obligated to follow any environmental laws.

The real question here is not whether or not government is capable of doing more good than harm by way of these programs, although the answer to that question is that they obviously do more harm, the real issue is that none of these programs is even legal.

Anyone with even an elementary knowledge of law and the Constitution knows that the Federal Government was never given the power to regulate these things and is in contempt of the Constitution for usurping the powers to create these departments and to persecute citizens using laws which are clearly unconstitutional.

The powers of the Federal Government are clearly stated in the Constitution and these departments do not fall under those powers.

rubbish. at the federal level the DOE should be shrunk back down to what it was in the 1950s before it became a cabinet post. leave the education of the children to the states, and just let the DOE set the standards the states are to meet. that way we can eliminate the rubbish non educational social programs the DOE is trying to foist on the american people.

i dont the think the EPA should be shut down, but it does need to be reigned in severely. and it needs to use real science when creating regulations, and then it also needs to balance the needs of the environment and the economy when considering these regulations.

this is another thing that should be done at the state level not the federal.

to big government types like you, any federal program is good, but in the end if you dont even know what the program is for, and by the way neither do i, then that is reason enough to shut the program down completely.

there was good reason for the CPB in years past, before cable. these days however this company should be forced to stand or fail on its own. but in the end this program is small, and actually does something good, so i have no real issue leaving it alone, for now.
