'While some cities and states across the U.S. are taking radical steps toward reforming marijuana regulations, a Missouri man named Jeff Mizanskey -- and several other U.S. inmates like him -- could die in prison for pot possession.
I heard this on a talk show the other day with Larry King. About 15% of those in prison are there because of pot convictions. The US spends more money on prisons than higher learning, universities.

Yes, the prison-industrial complex is almost as bad as the military-industrial complex.
Some people need to be locked up......but I don't think we should be wasting our money on casual pot users. Not sure if Jeff Mizanskey was that, or a 3-key a week kind of guy.

Potheads have been making this claim forever. I actually researched it among California prison statistics a number of years ago and found it to be false. Look it up.
That might be true. However, I know a young man convicted and spent two years in a very bad prison for a small amount of pot he provided for free to a narcotics officer. It was his first offense. He was beat badly in that prison and never recovered mentally and committed suicide shortly after his release.

I thought the number was high too. Also they did not mention whether those convictions where for simple use or moving a ton of pot.
What about non-violent offenses in general? Why even have jail and prison time for anything other than violent crimes?
