In the old books the term half breed was always used but usually it wasn't meant in a derogatory way. I read a lot of books that were written in the old west in the mid 1800s and they used the term a lot in those days. But what about today.

if you have to ask then you can just assume the answer is yes in 2014. You can guarantee someone out there will jump at the chance to take offense.

Yes, it is derogatory if you are not friends with someone who has a good laugh at being called a half-breed. Kind of like being called stupid.

It is derogatory. On the other hand, I was in a race-relations website once where someone wrote a post proclaiming that they had a baby that was half Asian and half black. Another poster chimed in that it was "a beautiful combination". I then felt compelled to ask what exactly made it a beautiful combination; what was the criteria? I received no reply. Racism can sometimes come in a pleasant package, and be well-intended. It's still racism.

People generally don't like their ancestry described as one would describe a dog's.

Today we are a little more tactful/civilized/educated and can use more courteous terms to describe the progeny from mixed marriages, if the fact even needs to be addressed in the first place. Calling some one a half breed today would be considered rude and insulting IMO.

eh no big deal if one is not offended by their actual heritage which I am one of those being 1/2 German and 1/2 Cherokee.
My husband calls me Squaw or Half Breed and means nothing by it and friends will do the same. It is trivial at best and nothing to get upset over in my Half Breed Opinion.
