The word "Indian" by itself means different things to different people. Here in Arizona Indian means Apache, Navajo, Hopi and so on. If talking about people like Bobby Jindal; we say "Indian from India" which ain't real true since Mr Jindal was born here.

I expect that the way things are developing, that all the white decendants will take the name of Native American, write their history books to reflect that and they'll just go back to calling us Redskins.

How about we just call them plain old Americans if they were born here just like everyone else that is born here?

Because we are not just plain old Americans. We are sovereign nations by treaty, passed by Congress and signed into law by one of your presidents. I am a member of the 6 Nations Iroquois Confederacy. It just so happens to be located in America. Our land is here, our culture is here, our identity is here and our history is here. You will never get us to abandon that. You'd have to kill us all. We will never be "plain old Americans" as you say.

That's what your real agenda is and always has been. Your kind forbid my mother to speak her native language or practice her culture and tried to make all Mohawks "Americans" and forget their culture and history. Your kind would be very happy if the whole "Indian Thing" would just disappear and we'd all just melt into the rest of the social background noise.
Your kind are doing it now with the Coke commercial. "How dare they sing America in a different language?" It's a threat and a slap in the face to white America that other cultures with rich histories are an important part of the entire fabric of America and had their one minute of recognition. You deny them even that carrot.

The same faction that want to co-op the term Native American for themselves, refuse to acknowledge that "Redskin" is a racist insult and are mortally offended that the song America was sung in seven languages are all related. It's all part of the same fascist right wing mindset.

In Alaska we are all just Americans. There is no sovereign nation in Alaska, other than the US. All Inuit, Tlingit, Athabascan, and every other tribe in Alaska are all US and Alaskan citizens, and subject to US and Alaskan laws.

Cool!

We've managed to keep our identity and nation intact since 1740 and that's in New York, and the heavily populated east. Arizona, where I currently live has 25% of the state owned by Native American nations. Apache, Navajo, Hopi, Zuni and 16 other tribes are all sovereign nations in Arizona, USA.
I imagine because of the climate the indigenous peoples of Alaska found it beneficial to partner with the invaders and their technology. ("Screw the dogs, give me a snowmobile" makes sense) We didn't find that to be the case for us nor especially beneficial then, nor do we now.
I know for a fact that the Yavapai Apache where I live own a casino and are very successful. They are using the profits from the casino to buy large sections of their ancestral lands back rather than giving up their sovereignty and assimilating.

In Alaska you can see Russia from your backyard, so you might as well be Russians.
