This story confounds me. Is HIV really a problem among crack smokers? If so, I highly doubt they're getting it from crack pipes. I get the needle program for IV drug users, but this makes no sense at all.

I'm not sure what your whining is about. Let us examine the issue.

One, the Canadian government is not involved. The Canadian Minister of Public Safety said that 'We disagree with promotors of this initiative'.

Second, the initiative is by a private, non-profit organization. Are you in principle against non-profits? Against private organizations?

Third, said organization owns and operates the vending machines (two, I believe). Surely you agree that private organizations may have vending machines?

Fourth, I believe that 'crack pipes' (which I have no idea what they are) are legal. In my youth, it was certainly legal to purchase 'bongs', although not legal to purchase, own or possess the marijuana that went into said bong. Surely you are not against a private organization selling a legal product in their own vending machines?

Fifth, said private organization is being competitive by offering their crack pipes for the bargain-basement price of 25 Canadian cents each. Are you against competition? Do you believe that the government should mandate that all crack pipes be sold at a base rate of the governments choosing?

Finally, the initiative is based on the theory that the sharing of crack pipes among the denizens who use such things can cause transmission of disease. Are you for the transmission of disease? Is that why you wish to prohibit a private organization from stocking their own vending machines with a lawful product?

I smell a Socialist rat, that I do.

Big deal. There are head shops all over the place including Ohio. They tend to sell bongs, bowls, crack pipes ect.... The head shops tend to put up a sign with a disclaimer..."not intended for illegal use." Ironically, cannabis and crack are both illegal here. Though I have a feeling that the war on cannabis and its prohibition has just about run it's course.

If crack pipes are so readily available, then why can't these guys pay for their own pipes? Why provide them for free (at taxpayer expense)? I get that needles for IV drug users really are a public health issue since they do easily pass along diseases, but crack pipes? I'm not buying it that people get HIV from sharing a pipe with someone else. If something is illegal, why enable it when it's not really necessary?

If guns were illegal but many citizens still used guns, would you be fine with the government providing bullets to criminals just because they might be making unsafe bullets? I seriously doubt it. If you caught your teenager with a crack pipe, would you let him keep it so he doesn't get HIV from sharing it with someone else? Or, would you take away the means to smoke crack in the first place? I can tell you I would never give my child a crack pipe if I found out he was smoking it. It makes absolutely no sense.

Pretty stupid plan carried out by one nonprofit.

Not sure how this is indicative of any political philosophy...

Americans can't get a handle on their own drug problems.

Who are we to criticize Canadians for their policies?

Doesn't really matter. Americans are by far the biggest drug consumer market in the world.
