Before 1215AD, the catholic church declared marriage to be secular and a tainted act. The apostle Paul saw marriage as a compromise allowing for holiness but an outlet for sexual desires. And you can't tell me that the royalty in Europe saw marriage as sacred, with all the courtly affairs. And various other cultures around the world had VERY different ideas of marriage than that of the US's. So where did this idea of marriage come from and why do many adhere to it?

Marriage comes from God. It's not a legal agreement, or a religious agreement at its root. A man and woman agree to cleave to each other and become one entity, or one unit for the remainder of life on earth.

I believe when a marriage is good and operates as it should, it should show qualities similar to God's qualities - such as love, sacrifice, loyalty, unity.

It also allows a format for the man and wife to fulfill God's desire to populate the earth with healthy people that hopefully (from God's standpoint) grow up to worship Him.

When did God tell you this? or are you him or her?

Whose God? Marriage in some form or another pre-dates the invention of the Jewish-Christian-Muslim God, and existed in societies that didn't have the Abrahamic God.

Please. The Catholic church doesn't represent the entire world.

Here is a better question...why is this still symbolic? And we KNOW where it comes from.

Talk about worthless, shallow and embedded traditions.

I suppose someone should tell my parents that their marriage of more than 35 years is fake.
