About 25% of non-whites were shown not to have friends outside of their race as well. For the most segregated minority of black people, it is somewhat understandable seeing as blacks have been pressured to live in certain neighborhoods, areas and even entire cities amongst nothing but blacks for eons. The study concluded that Asians and Latinos have the most friends outside of their own race as these cultures have been more open to integration in friendships. Also, Asians are the least segregated racial group in America. It was also concluded that western states like California showed the most integration in terms of friendships and relationships.
A lot of this is mostly an issue of demographics seeing as the United States, as a whole, is over 70% white. I can imagine it would be very, very hard for a white person in Maine or North Dakota to make non-white friends as there are very few non-whites in swaths of the country.
But this nationwide trend also reflects the rampant segregation we have in America. The vast majority of Americans live in suburban and urban areas. In most metro areas, there is a healthy representation of ethnic minorities.
However, segregation remains a huge problem in this country. Even some of America's most diverse big cities, like New York, are profoundly segregated. Segregation is very, very pronounced in metro areas like Detroit where nearly 100% of the black population resides in the city and nearly 100% of the white population resides in the suburbs. I live in the DC Area, which is so segregated, that you can literally cut the metro area in half along roughly 13-16th st./Georgia Ave in Washington, DC, proper to separate the greater white DC metro area in the west in NW DC and bordering Montgomery County and Northern Virginia from the greater black DC metro area to the east in NE/SE DC and bordering PG County. It is even more troubling to know that segregation is so complete in much of the DC Area that most blacks in predominantly white Montgomery County, Maryland are not native-born blacks, but they are recent African immigrants or the children of these immigrants.
Whites, statistically, show the least desire to cultivate interracial friendships. Why is this? Obviously, whites and many blacks in this country do not get along because of the long rocky history between the two groups. Many, many blacks are very resentful at whites, in general, because of the past history of slavery, Jim Crow, inner city ghettoization, police/legal mistreatment and systematic oppression from a white society that black people across this land are subjected to everyday of their lives.
Many Latinos and even many Asians also resent whites for similar reasons as blacks. However, the white-black relations are the most strained in most parts of this country although there are obvious exceptions everywhere. Upper income and educated whites get along with whitewashed Asians of similar social standing in many areas of the country. But ghetto Asians in California cities rarely associate with whites. Fresh off the border Latino immigrants tend to be ethnocentric, poorer urban dwelling Latino groups like Puerto Ricans NYC and Mexicans in urban California tend to dislike whites.
But do whites choose to befriend their own kind because they don't want to be constantly reminded that they should harbor white guilt? Minorities such as Asians are often forced to integrate and come into contact with other races seeing as Asians only represent 4% of the U.S. population. Whites in America living in racially diverse metro areas have the biggest option to completely cop out of integration by self-segregating themselves from other races. I live in a diverse town that is a little less than 50% white and I see it all the time among all races.
When whites are amongst themselves, like any other racial group, they feel they can say whatever they want no matter how racist and insensitive it comes off. I know this being mixed race and being able to pass for white and being surrounded by upper middle class suburban white people when they thought there were no minorities present. I heard some ugly ignorant racist things being said about every race except for white people. If they had known I wasn't white, they would have been walking on egg shells. This is because it is not socially acceptable for whites, especially liberal whites living in liberal areas, to be vocally and openly racist. I will admit that black people who are racist cannot be described as closet racists and are more open, honest and vocal in their bigotry from my own life experiences. Thoughts?

I can't believe someone actually bothered to publish a study after they must have realized the reason a higher percentage of white people have no non-white friends than black people who have no non-black friends is because there are far more white people to befriend.
If you put sixty-two non-Hispanic white people in a room with twelve non-Hispanic blacks, eighteen Hispanics (mostly white), five Asians and three individuals of mixed or undetermined race and then expect the non-Hispanic whites to make friends with the less numerous blacks, Hispanics and Asians before the more numerous whites is a desperate attempt to brand whites as racists.
That 25% of the blacks had to go looking for other blacks to talk to when the room is full of whites, Hispanics and Asians says much about the racist tendencies of blacks.
Race doesn't matter in other parts of the World ie Black Europeans. But the blacks in america are so damn stereotypical. Materialistic, listen to rap, watch sports and eat at McDonalds. Describes 85% of black males I've ever met.
Other than being materialistic, I don't see how the other stereotypes you listed should cause one to view Blacks negatively.
I grew up in LA. I went to middle, high school with approximately 5_6 white people.
During late 90s everything was segregated. As Asians, blacks and latins grew up, we stopped being friends as much and we mostly self segregated.
Interracial dating and marriage between whites and latinos was basically the only time I saw people mix. Alot of that had to do there being less hostility between the 2 groups as compared to any other groups.
I myself self segregated and didn't even do so purposely. I just found more in common with other latinos. What's weird though its that as much as people say latinos are segregated no other group mixes as much, and I find this true amongst every American born group but blacks and Asians.
My church growing up was a Spanish church alot of younger members were Russian females, Armenian females, older white males married too latinos.
I think if not for latinos America would be far more segregated.
As a black american, I really don't have any white american friends, and generally speaking, I find European whites much more congenial. I have a few friendships and professional relations with a few who are Russian, Albanian, Turkish, Greek etc...however with white americans, it's just different.
Not sure if it's because of the news but whenever they do a crime story the black guy who is involved has on a hoodie. So when I see that type of guy I always make sure I look at him directly in the eye so he can be made aware that "I see you" lol
Yes. I do. Given that I have spent almost all of my professional career being the only black person around it is indeed wise for me to "study white people".

No. See cease offering opinions when you have no idea of the environment which people have to deal with.
So you study white people through association and observation and then draw an opinion about all white people.
Then you ask about me being the only white person around, in a situation involving black people and go ahead and provide what seem to think would be my answer: No.
You know squat about me, yet you know everything about me because....................wait for it...............I'm white!!!! And all this based on your "observations". How does being an observer make someone an expert on ALL white people?
You tell me to cease offering "opinions" and everything you seem to think you know is based on your opinions by observing a small number of white people. Not only that, you assume to know the answer to questions you ask me and provide the answer. Do you see how foolish you look?
Stop throwing around that your "professional career". It means nothing. Anyone with a special education, training or skill has a profession. A plumber, an electrician, a manager of a fast food place, are also professions.
I don't know what your "profession" is that limits your exposure to only white people - but if it's so unbearable to be around white people you might consider changing professions.
Funny you aren't fixated in skin color, but definitely seem to notice when a neighborhood is black. How come? Its not as if you will feel out of place.
