Article this morning, front page of Chronicle, on a law that would require anyone working in a bar or restaurant who prepares ready-to-eat food - including your bartender or barista, to wear plastic gloves.

The key quote: "There was not a specific incident that led to the new rule.."

In other words, it just sounded like a good idea and they passed a law. This is typical here in California, lawmakers frequently have no idea why they pass most laws.

Sushi chefs, bartenders and others rely on bare hands.

If there is any saving grace, they all realize they screwed up and are trying to repeal the law.

This was probably pushed by a lobbyiest representing the supplier of plastic gloves.

The use of quotation marks in the title made me think this would have something to do with the law requiring porn actors to wear condoms.

This is very typical of California.

Most of the people passing laws do not even know what the law actually does. This is very evident in the gun arena where people are making laws outlawing things that they could not even describe, let alone have an articulate conversation about.

I don't understand the drive to make humans completely sterile of all germs and bacteria. At some point we have to ask ourselves if the reason our children are walking mucus and allergy incubators is because we refuse to expose ourselves and our children to germs. Something is awry, and I'm convinced its because we've for some reason became scared of germs in anything and everything.

An obsession with eliminating bacteria will simply cause more dangerous bacteria that can't be killed to form and we will be less tolerant of bacteria in general. We're already seeing this with overuse of antibiotics.

I'm kind of a germaphobe so I'm sort of hypocritical here, but this is going to become a real problem.

There have been studies saying that children's lack of exposure to germs have made them more susceptible to diseases later on in life.

Exactly. When my wife was pregnant, she was told by many to "not scoop the cat litter box anymore" by numerous people. Being the INTJ that I am, I questioned not whether that was good advice, but whether such advice had crept into our social and psychological structure to the point that perhaps "not scooping the litter box" was part and parcel of the overall scheme to protect unborn children, which in turn had the opposite affect and instead had a deleterious affect on child allergies. When 20 million women are told not to scoop that cat box, and that becomes the new "norm," and more children have "peanut allergies" and other previously uncommon illnesses, then perhaps we can look back and say we shot ourselves in the foot by overreacting to bad advice?
