Heh, when I was on submarines in the Navy, we were getting ready for putting to sea in 24 hours. One of the things we did was run the O2 generator. The generator through electrolysis separates the molecules that make up water. Hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen being explosive is vented overboard and the O2 is sent to the O2 air banks. On the aft end of the sail is the hydrogen vent. One of the Auxiliarymen came up through the hatch with a bunch of plastic bags, filled them with hydrogen and set them free. Last seen floating over Ford Island. True story.
The cross marks a location near where her son died.
Harrier has passed by cemeteries where headstones are mere inches from public sidewalks on the other side of a fence.
So, define "roadside".
Roadside in this case is the public easement beside the road. The headstones you see are on private property. The cross was 1/4 to 1/2 mile from where the son died.
Well gee, I guess we need to bann all billboard signs or business marquees because they are roadside distractions too! I think the memorial serves a purpose to show drivers that someone did die here so please drive safe.
Billboards, etc. are banned on Alaska highways, actually.
but the same goes for you and your beliefs. not everything is going to go YOUR way.
I don't think it is moral to ask this mother to take down a memorial cross for her son, even if you don't believe in God. it's like a gravesite, not like a cross erected to convert or intimidate others.
Morality doesn't come into play. YOU wouldn't ask because you're afraid you'd offend someone or be thought "mean". Not the case, but this is a good example of well meaning people getting gushy over things they shouldn't. Playing on emotions...people fall for it so everyone does it.
LAKE ELSINORE: Teen
The link says he was hit while crossing at a 'blind curve' (see map) and the memorial is at the intersection/off ramp to the north (see map in link)
From the link.

Dressed in dark clothes and wearing ear buds, he crossed the eastbound lane at a
blind curve, his mother said.
That sounds very cold-hearted. It may be true, but very cold-hearted.
Yeah, we all sometimes do stupid, unwise or just use poor judgment that results in an accident or worse.
Have you never misjudged a curve in the road, your speed, hydroplaned, or hit a patch of ice? Even a moment of inattention can be deadly. It happens. Still, the the people involved were someone's family, son, daughter, dad, mom...it's good to show some compassion even if they did do something "stupid".

True!
So why do we have to memorialize them?
