"took pretty good care of their slaves AND LIVESTOCK" ? Slaves WERE CONSIDERED livestock. "Were kept in slavery through LACK OF EDUCATION AND OPPORTUNITY"? No, kept in slavery with chains, whips, bloodhounds and fugitive slave laws.
Further, anti-poverty programs are not entitlements, and, according to at least some economists (Paul Krugman for example) have lowered to poverty rate. We all pay for entitlements like Social Security and Medicare/Medicaid through our taxes, which is why we are all entitles to their benefits.
Very true. The dark side of the issue and latter the goal of the Civil War after Gettysburg, by President Lincoln. Many associate Slavery for the War Between the States and the CSA forces taking Ft. Sumter.
It was States Rights. The North was squeezing the south on their cotton crops. This is the short version FYI
Well, now, can we look at this from a purely financial standpoint?
Lets say you bought a horse for, just to use a number, $10,942.32.
How are you going to treat that horse? Will you take good care of it, feed it properly, train it, work it, and hope it wins some races for you, then put it to stud hoping for salable offspring?
Or, will you beat it, feed it garbage, and work it to death, thus losing ALL of your "investment"?
Now, let's say you were a plantation owner in the 1850s. You go to Charleston, to the slave market, and buy a big healthy black man for $200 (in the 1850s, that was a LOT of money!)
How will you take care of him? What woman will you allow him to breed with? Will you sell the children (if any) to profit on your investment? It is, after all, the accepted practice for the times.
Yes, there WERE abuses of slaves. There is no doubt about it. But, in my reading over the years, I have found that the majority of slaves were pretty well taken care of.
Of course, the history revisionists don't want to admit that. As always, whether it be news or history, facts don't sell as well as sensationalism. They will always play up the sensationalism whenever possible. Especially if the facts don't fit there agenda.

See, this is an example of the failed education system in america.
Some slaves indeed were allowed to be educated, again, all slaves were NOT treated alike, and some were indeed treated very well.

Wrong wrong wrong wrong wrong..
First you claim they arent entitlements, and then you claim they are entitlements. You flip flopped on your own paragraph..
Second, they are NOT entitlements, nor does everyone pay for...
"The first slave owner in america happened to be black.. Anthony Johnson."
It would also behoove us to remember exactly WHO in Africa was selling black people to slave ships; BLACK chieftains! That's right, Negroes were sold into slavery by the chieftains of other tribes, getting rid of their enemies!
Yes, slavery was and is a foul disgusting institution. BUT, we need to know the FACTS that are being hidden from us by the historical revisionists. FACTS are often very uncomfortable things. Some seem to think it is best to suppress them.
Obviously, I don't agree.

So slaves were treated well by and large, and Blacks brought slavery upon themselves
I pray to god the GOP uses this as a bumper sticker or slogan.

I'm still waiting for you to actually address the points he made which is government perpetuates poverty and keeps people poor, much like slavery did..
When are you going to actually talk about what he said, rather than what you wanted him to say so you can toot your own horn of hate?
Yea, he did not say it wasn't so bad....no where in his post does it say that.
The candidate said the following on FB:
Quote:
Back in the day of slavery, slaves were kept in slavery by denying them
education and opportunity while providing them with their basic needs .. Not by beating them and starving them. (Although there were isolated cases if course) Basically slave owners took pretty good care of their slaves and livestock and
this kept business rolling along.
All of the bold above is ridiculous and he did say that owners "took pretty good care of their slaves and livestock."
It is funny to me but sickening at the same time. And if you also don't think that slavery in the US wasn't violent and that the majority were treated well, you need to do some reading. Start with the actual book "Twelve Years a Slave." The author - Northrup, goes into great detail about the way he was treated under both good and bad slave owners. FWIW, the movie does not follow the dialogue of the book. As usual, movies lose a lot of the substance of the book and even though I did feel the movie was good, the book is VERY powerful and provides more insights into what being a slave was really about, what they think and feel - the beatings, the hunger, the rape, the defeated spirits, just the horror that these people endured and survived in.
It should not be trivialized or made to look more positive than it truly was.
