The Second Amendment was actually quite purposefully written by the Founding Fathers to be about states' rights to maintain militias, and it has been interpreted - and reasonably so - as the basis for individual gun-owning rights. And generations of Supreme Court rulings have maintained that it is not a violation of the Second Amendment to maintain reasonable gun control measures, such as not making gun ownership legal for felons, minors, or serious mental patients. The Second Amendment is not about having no control ever on the actions of any individual with a gun.
