For 3 hours on Thursday evening, motorists in Los Angeles were left stranded on the highway because a suicidal man was threatening to jump off an overpass. This forced law enforcement to close the highway on BOTH sides. The highway reopened at 9:30pm when they finally talked the man down.
Should police have let him jump? Should he have been charged for obstructing traffic? Now, as someone who has been suicidal the LAST thing I wanted to do was inconvenience others. I thought that shooting myself or jumping was too bloody; hence why I contemplated hanging, suffocation, and pill overdose.

In Washington and across the country, males are much more likely to die by suicide, while girls are more likely to make suicide attempts that result in hospitalization. Hanging and use of a firearm are the most frequently used methods for youth suicide. Cutting and overdose are the most frequency used methods for suicide attempts that result in hospitalization.

I'm glad they were able to talk him down, but truly suicidal people are going to end up doing it no matter what happens if they don't get the help they need. No, he shouldn't be charged with obstructing traffic. His hospital bill is probably going to be high enough.

That's actually not true. People who attempt to commit suicide are doing the whole "cry for help" thing, which most certainly does inconvenience others because a lot of the times they're not successful and then everyone's treating them at the hospital and nursing home and so on.

I suggest you seek counseling to help deal with the problems you are dealing with. If you don't think you "inconvenience" someone by killing yourself in private, then you haven't thought about the people who have to find you like that and the trauma they have to live with.
As for the jumper, the police did the right thing and those inconvenienced by the traffic will live, I am sure it isn't the first time people in LA sat in traffic.

Some just want the attention. Notice he didn't jump -- and he got lots of attention.
But please don't consider suicide -- life is too short as it is.

I'm no longer suicidal. I take my meds and go to therapy on a weekly basis. I'm doing much better now!

Do you think that a link to the story could be posted?
Harrier lives near L.A. and has not heard of this, probably because the big story is the northern California bus crash.
