A House committee has approved a proposal that would end door-to-door mail delivery for millions of Americans in favor of communal or curbside boxes.

The House Oversight and Government Reform Committee approved the measure on an 18-13 party-line vote Wednesday. The bill would direct the U.S. Postal Service to convert 15 million addresses over the next decade to the less costly, but also less convenient delivery method.

Well something has to be done...........folks can pick up their mail on the way home although is the post office staffed to handle that. I guess if they aren't driving around. Or they will build some BS "green" mail stations all over the country to cost even more more likely.............lol

Yeah, that will work great. Because so many are community minded and we can trust our mail be delivered to just any old neighbor.

My mail box is already one tenth of a mile from my front door. Such a regulation won't affect me a bit!
Also, since I live on a rural route, I never put checks in my mailbox. All of my outgoing bill payments go directly to the post office. Even mail that doesn't contain a check goes to the post office on the next trip to town.
IMO, they should go to three days per week rural mail delivery. Some routes would be M, W, F; some would be Tu, Th, and Sa.
Most of my mail is political ads and sales ads anyway. Three days a week of that junk would be plenty!

Wish they would. Virtually 95% of the mail I receive is just garbage junk mail. Waste of paper and gas to deliver junk mail.

I agree...........most of the crap I get in the snail mail is nothing but ads and the like. Digital billing has taken over. I think my cable bill still comes in the mail but it's already set up to be paid by my account so I just toss it. It is a waste of time and resources. I think they keep it around to stuff you box with campaign crappola.

On April 25, 2012, the U.S. Senate passed a deeply flawed postal reform bill, S.1789, the 21st Century Postal Service Act, by a vote of 62 to 37. Among other things, it would stop Saturday delivery. The certain effect of this bill would be to cut 100,000 jobs over the next three years. This is somewhat better than the 200,000 job loss that would result from a bill being pushed by Representative Darrell Issa and the House Republicans. Fortunately, it has not been acted upon by the House.

It is clear that the GOP wants to strangle the U.S. Post Office in order to drive it out of business or privatize it, fire its workers and hire those willing to work without a union at minimum wages and no benefits. Even if the Postal Service were wracked by waste and inefficiency as its critics contend, it doesn’t make sense to do this at a time when the economy is still suffering from massive unemployment. The haste to reduce Postal jobs now will simply add to unemployment.

brilliant.

I have a communal mailbox. One stop drop for the mailman. Efficient. Hardly an inconvenience for me.

[do it]
