Well. I watch and read the news on a regular basis. Can't recall any straight white men being arrested and charged with a crime. There's a certain segment of the population out there that live in a fantasy world filled with hysteria, outrage and hate.

Since political correctness took center stage in our society. Since "white guilt" and "white priviledge" became familiar, well used terms. Since we started becoming the "Union of American Socialist Republics". Since our bible became something to laugh at and deride. Since the radicals took over in academia..........
Bravo, sir.

White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack by Peggy McIntosh

That's a pretty good primer on white privilege. The basic thing is this: there are a lot of benefits you get because you were born white. You shouldn't feel guilty about this, because your skin color isn't your fault. However, you absolutely should be aware that your skin color (and possibly your sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, physical ability, economic background, religious affiliation, and more) give you benefits because you are part of the dominant group. McIntosh came up with a good, long list of white benefits, some are pretty benign, others have more serious consequences, but they all add up.

As a white person, we're not subject to institutionalized racism. Yes, on a legal level all races are equal, but there are a lot of social and business interactions where equality is lacking. If you're passed over for a job, it's probably not because you're white.

In fact, if you're applying for a job that requires a lot of networking to get your foot in the door, you've got a leg up. Back in the day, those businesses were run by white men, because they were the ones allowed to run businesses. So when a position in the company opened up, they tended to recommend people from their social circle...who were also generally white men.

Women and people of color have a harder time breaking into certain industries because of nepotism, and if they in turn do the same (hire their friends who are of the same sex or race), people tend to be critical of those decisions. "Well, Marsha only wanted Javon for that position because he's black, too." The opposite is rarely said about the hiring decisions of white people...unless they hire a person of color over a white person. Then it's automatically assumed they were forced into that decision by Affirmative Action.

So as a result, even today people of color and women don't truly have equal access to the same economic opportunities as white men do. And it's very easy to take a stab at the effect that has on their economic stability and their communities.

This is one example among many.

What you're feeling and seeing isn't oppression. It's an effort to give everyone a level playing field. You only feel like you're losing power because power is slowly being more evenly distributed between groups. You're not losing ground, it's just that others are catching up...and maybe you don't like that.

Yet IF a white person drove into an all black neighborhood like I accidentally one time did, our lives become in danger. Getting stopped by a cop is NBD unless you have something to hide. BTW, I stopped at a gas station to ask directions and the guy (black) called the cops to get me an escort out of that place. He was a nice guy and knew the danger I apparently was in.

In my own state capital, Boston, I got on the wrong MBTA car and was headed for Roxbury instead of Braintree. The T cop made me stand right next to him until the next inbound train came. Don't tell me it's only whites who have race problems.

I'll explain in simple terms what has happened to those white males who feel under siege these days. See, back in the day, minorities were the underclass, often dictated by law. Just by being white back then meant you are above them all without any effort on your part. Now these laws are gone but you are still in a privileged position because all that wealth and power gathered during those days don't just disappear overnight. The people in charge are still largely white males. However, just by being a white male these days doesn't automatically elevate you above anyone, you actually have to have skills, intelligence and work for it. And also you lost your right to say anything bad about other races without consequences.

Really? I've been in black neighborhoods a lot over the years, considering I'm black. I've also seen lots of white people in these neighborhoods when I was there. But I have yet to see a white person get killed in a black neighborhood.

Nah. You don't have white privilege.

That's funny. When I moved to Boston, I was told that there were certain neighborhoods (Southie, parts of Dorchester, etc.) that I could not go to, or I would be killed.
