While I'm not defending Donald Sterling because he's clearly a racist and bigot, he does have the right to think and feel however he wants.
While being a racist is immoral, it's not illegal.
As long as his racist thoughts didn't turn into racist actions (such as paying black players less than white players. Not letting blacks live in his real estate properties, etc), I believe he's free to feel anyway he wants about any race, creed, religion or sexual orientation.
I think this is one of those "I don't agree with what you say, but I'll defend your right to say it" situations.

no its not pointless.
the public lynch mob seems to be judge and jury and is trying to force him to sell.
I wonder if this whole thing was a conspiracy to get racists like Oprah to buy the team.

The OP said it isn't illegal. Of course it isn't. Nobody ever said it was. That isn't the issue at all. Again, pointless.
it will become illegal if certain LWNJ senators have their way.
Please provide evidence that any attempt has been made to repeal the First Amendment. You're just blowing smoke. On the contrary I see far more right wingers here opposed to the First Amendment over religion etc.

Public opinion is not the law.
I happen to think the man is a giant dick, but he has the right to say whatever he wants in his own conversations. No one, however, has violated that right.
If Donald Sterling was talking in private about wanting to have sex with children and that got out, wouldn't you expect him to face scorn from the public? What he said was similarly offensive to a lot of people and so he is facing scorn from a lot of people. Scorn does not equate to him being punished by the government for his thoughts or words. His punishment is coming from the NBA, an association he joined and pledged to live by their by-ways---nothing illegal about that. Sure, he's free to feel and say what he wants but you are forgetting that everyone else in America is equally free to condemn him as the scumbag he is.
