"The current interpretation of the non-weapon policy in NDSU...understands our fencing equipment as weapons," says the club's coach Enrique Alvarez.
Alvarez has been fencing since his early teens. He says despite their appearance, the foils, epees and sabers they use don't have sharp edges or points.
...
NDSU's Police and Safety Office Director Ray Boyer cited the school's policy manual and Code of Student Behavior, saying sabers and swords are prohibited on campus:
"They are deemed weapons, and as such, possession or use on University owned or controlled property is prohibited," he says.
So they are not allowed to practice on campus.
Anything can be a weapon with a little imagination. This is a little kooky.
I'm surprised to see this in North Dakota. Perhaps the influx of Californians snapping up those ND jobs is starting to take effect. Somebody called it 'Californication.'

Yep. This stupidity has been imported. There is an equally ridiculous leftist offended campaign brew just north on the UND campus as well. Apparently someone people wore "offensive" t-shirts to a off campus party last week, now there is an all out witch hunt to find and persecute the offenders. It is truly pathetic.
