Hmmm, there goes the whole imperial conspiracy thing...

Quote:
Iraq will never allow the United States to have permanent military bases on its soil, the government's national security adviser said, calling the issue a "red line" that cannot be crossed.

"We need the United States in our war against terrorism, we need them to guard our border sometimes, we need them for economic support and we need them for diplomatic and political support," Mowaffaq al-Rubaie said.
"But I say one thing, permanent forces or bases in Iraq for any foreign forces is a red line that cannot be accepted by any nationalist Iraqi," he told Dubai-based al Arabiya television.
Rubaie's comments, in an interview first broadcast late on Monday night, were the clearest sign yet that Iraq's leaders are looking ahead to the days when they have full responsibility for the country's defence.

Basically they want keep our troops and use them as they please - but they aren't allowed to have a permanent standing base designed to withstand any sort of attack.

Psh, too bad. Almost half of people working on base are Civi's or contractors - would create a large number of jobs for Iraqis too.

The Iraq government voted against something that would have helped the U.S. strategic interests... and you find that amusing?

Bet Bush and any advisors he still has left are not chuckling at this vote. Just another example of local governments acting differently than the way we had expected or hoped they would when we go over and get involved in their affairs.

So now the Iraqis after their liberation expect us to continue to give them economic, political and diplomatic support... but we get no bases. That is just great.

Intel reports show the Iraq War has increased terrorism and threats to Americans.

So....what do we get out of this deal again??

The bases in iraq are quite secure.

The point is there is not to be a permanent US military presence in Iraq.

That is good.

Now we just have to get out of South Korea,Japan,Germany,Kosovo and on and on and on...

ROTFL...of course we'll have a base there. They just have to posture a bit.

Why is that good? You really think we were not planning to have bases there?

What I find amusing is how some went on and on and on about the evil American empire and darn it all it looks like there won't be a permanent US military presence in Iraq afterall...

Democracy is a wonderful thing, brought to the Iraqi people by the USA and her allies.

The USA will have an ally in the region and hopefully something for other Muslim nations to look towards with hope...once peace comes to that nation.

Sad to see people think bringing freedom from a murderous dictator is not enough, they think there should be some sort of reward....

Isn't liberating a few million people the moral thing to do???

You are way out there, oz.

You agree that we should have spent thousands of American Lives and trillions of dollare.... just to liberate the Iraqis?

Are you a vet by chance?

You seem kind of odd yourself.

You DEMAND that others provide part of their income to provide health insurance but complain that the USA isn't going to 'get something' for liberating 20 million plus Iraqis from tyranny.

What was gained for the 400,000+ dead in WWII???

Iraq basically says give us your blood and $$$$$ and leave us alone.

I say give Iraq the finger and leave them alone.
