The problem is determining when you involuntarily commit someone. I think I prefer a few deaths to locking thousands of people up in order to possibly prevent a few murders.
That really is a touchy line to cross, isn't it. The ambiguities in the legal definition of mental illness is only one major hurtle to cross, then we have our constitutional given right to be free to deal with and it probably would take a constitutional amendment to make any meaningful changes in our ability to involuntarily commitment all the people someone else deems is a danger to society. Not sure anyone really has the will to do that. The devil is in the details.

It is a very difficult issue but it is the problem but its what we refuse to discuss. Perhaps someone experienced in this far better than someone hired to write tickets could have picked up on his issues and got him help.
Californian mass murderer victim's father blames NRA
That's right. Instead of championing personal responsibility for actions, he's blaming the second amendment and law abiding citizens who have the right to carry for unstable people who go on murdering sprees. The aunt calls Obama to action. Will this stir up another gun control debate before the midterms?
At a press conference earlier today, a self-identified father of one of the victims in last night’s mass shooting near the University of California, Santa Barbara, named his son, Chris Martinez, as one of the victims. In a heart-wrenching statement the father, Richard Martinez, expressed his profound sadness. His 20-year-old son was on his way to a market when he was killed.
“Why did Chris die?” Richard Martinez said at a press conference. “Chris died because of craven, irresponsible politicians and the NRA. They talk about gun rights, what about Chris’ right to live? When will this insanity stop?”
I feel for him, but he's going after the wrong people.

Of course -- he's a liberal and we can excuse him for his grief -- but it's the liberal mass media trying to exploit this for their agenda -- so they're focusing on the shot victim but ignoring the 3 he murdered by stabbing them with a knife. Anything for the agenda.
Same way the liberal media ignored that killing where the rich kid plowed his car into a crowd to kill them. And the Boston terrorists used homemade bombs for their killing spree.
