Even though this surgery shouldn't be covered for free, why does it seem like everyone is so freaked out by a sex change operation? I thought we were evolving as a society and realize that some people can be born in the wrong body. Why would they just be faking it to get attention?
Why is that most people are accepting of gay people but not of transgender people? What do you think a transgender person should do?

Good or bad major surgeries and or treatments are looked at from many angles including, to put it bluntly a cost to benefit ration. By this looking at what is best for the patient as well as spending government resources which are always tight. The USA does this with say prostate cancer in men over a certain age and so forth but nothing like many European countries.
Major surgery for anyone >65 much less 74 is not to be taken likely. Male to female gender reassignment surgery for all intents and purposes involved removal of all or part of a male member and creating what amounts to an opening (wound). The human body has a natural tendency to close up invasive openings as it repairs itself. Rather like having one's ears pierced. For a given period of time earrings must be worn 24/7 or the holes will close. Perhaps after years of wearing same the holes will remain more or less open, but even then there is a chance they will shut. This is the reason why historically women in mourning were allowed to wear earrings when most other jewelry was forbidden.
The first months and even year or longer post operation for transsexuals involves constant and frequent "dilation" in order to keep the hole open and preserve or even deepen. As one can imagine this is not totally pain free which is why sometimes compliance lacks. Then the other and obvious question occurs, how much "use" will this new equipment get on a 74 year old transgender woman. Otherwise what is the point of it all.
Suppose from a medical/psych point of view once the mind and body are in agreement that is all which matters, but seems a rather expensive and possibly injurious way to go so late in life.

Some people are simply intolerant.
Also, I would like to take what you wrote here a step further. Even if someone is not born in the wrong body but still prefers the body of the other sex/gender better, then I don't see what the problem is with such an individual getting a sex change either. After all, it is his or her own body, and thus, he or she should be able to do what he or she wants with it.

Sometimes our bodies are born one way but our mind tells us differently. The brain is very complicated and no one really knows how it works.

Not everyone is happy with the way that he or she is born. Thus, some people seek to change their bodies. Personally, I myself don't have any problem with this, and as a side note, if we will ever develop the technology to change people's sexuality, then I wouldn't have any problem with it if some people decide to use this technology as well.
