I heard on a talk show this morning that the original request from the Taliban (or whoever released Sgt. Bergdahl) was 21 prisoners and $1million. So the US negotiators did pretty well.
When will you ever learn? There is no Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda is a term made to put a face we can hate on a rag-tag group of nationalist militants who are threatening western oil company interests. Our own government, owned and operated by the corporations and the wealthy are the real threat.
I will just remind you that BO is the one who stopped the trials, tried to bring the terrorists here to our own country for "civilian" trial (which is really stupid) and is to blame for trials not going forth.
I'm glad that at least one person in this thread is aware that suits against George Bush kept him from bringing the GITMO prisoners to Military Court at GITMO, and that even when the US Courts settled how they must be tried - then the Obama administration wanted them tried in New York City and the Democrats from New York screamed blue murder about it.
There is a reason that the House & the Senate voted down the trials in New York (they can only be tried in either New York or Washington, D.C.) - they voted it down AND they passed a Law forcing Obama to jump through a lot of hoops and inform the Congress of any movement of prisoners. They don't want those trials in their own Cities and they are probably afraid that some sort of Legal Loophole or screwy Judge might cut them lose. There is a big loss of Trust in these issues.
NIMBY in action -- it was great to talk about trials in the USA right up until the CongressCritters understood it was going to be in their city. All of this happened while the Democrats held both the House and the Senate. After that - the O-Team and the DOJ never let the trials begin at GITMO. They went even further - they quit allowing the prisoners to see their Lawyers, they quit allowing the Press to have access for the most part and then they instituted the new policy of "indefinite incarceration without Charges OR Trials. The O-Team sent in their own people to investigate the cases against the prisoners and they came to the same conclusion that the other Teams had found - 48 of these prisoners were just too dangerous to ever move (including Taliban 5, one was Aqqani). There is plenty of blame to go around and a lot of it was totally self inflicted. This is what happens when there is a "Base" to appease and when Politics trump National Security.
As many focus on the event, the deserter, the Obama Five, the use of the word 'sacred' (except when religion and the Constitution are concerned) we are not looking at his other hand. While he signed off on the operation, SOMEONE else in his White House is directly responsible for pushing this whole operation. Who?
The underlying truth is in the details. There is far more to this whole debacle than meets the eye. Someone in his administration is pulling strings for the enemy.

Plus another problem with the civilian trials is that all information must be exposed to both sides which would include military secrets and military confidential information. That cannot happen, thus civilian trials would have been a terrible move as far as our USA security and safety.
Another stupid idea from BO and Holder. Started questioning their intelligence and/or knowledge about how it all really works. Can they be that dumb?

Nobody stopped Bush from trying them. He argued he didn't have to.

The Senate and House voted that he could. He simply had to inform them of his plans.
