Regardless of whether or not Bergdahl is guilty of desertion, there may actually be a silver lining to this. Before this, we would have pretty much assumed the Taliban to kill any American they came in contact with - in a very brutal manner. The Taliban suggests kidnapping more soldiers. In any other war we wouldn't call it kidnapping, we'd simply call it becoming a POW. Although the life of a POW may not be the greatest while he's being held, it is presumably better than being killed.
Again, whether Bergdahl is guilty or not is irrelevant because it's likely that any future soldier kidnapped would be innocent of such charges and would be a "legitimate" POW. Though I don't want to see any American killed or taken prisoner by the Taliban, if given a choice, I'd choose POW.
