Have you seen some of the stuff in the latest draft of the Texas Republican Party Platform? While there's a lot of unremarkable stuff and some good ideas, the bad ones are just... nuts.

https://s3.amazonaws.com/s3.document...tee-report.pdf

Quote:
"We support the right of individuals to make their own dietary decisions. We oppose any laws regarding the production, distribution, or consumption of food."

First part sounds OK, but I even need to explain why the second is a bad idea? They also pander to the anti-vaccination crowd:

Quote:
"All adult citizens should have the legal right to conscientiously choose which vaccines are administered to themselves, or their minor children, without penalty for refusing a vaccine. We oppose any effort by any authority to mandate such vaccines or any medical database that would contain personal records of citizens without their consent."

They're simultaneously against socialism and for state-supported living centers for the mentally disabled. They're for protecting pregnancy centers from harassing ordinances and regulations, but they promote the same against abortion providers. They're also for rights for unborn fetuses and against the UN Rights of the Child. Guess consistency isn't their strong suit.

They want to bar adoption by same-sex couples, cause it's better for kids to sit in foster care until they're adults. Then there's the whole reparative therapy endorsement:

Quote:
"We recognize the legitimacy and value of counseling which offers reparative therapy and treatment to patients who are seeking escape from the homosexual lifestyle. No laws or executive orders shall be imposed to limit or restrict access to this type of therapy."
They're against discrimination, but it's totes OK if businesses want to fire gays or anyone else involved in immoral sexual behavior. Because freedom.

They want school vouchers, but no "government interference through definition, regulation, accreditation, licensing, or testing." It's really all about funneling public money into religious organizations. Would the kids get an adequate education? Who cares? The GOP wants to keep 'em religious and dumb.

Then there's that whole pesky First Amendment myth.

Quote:
"We affirm that the public acknowledgement of God is undeniable in our history and is vital to our freedom, prosperity and strength. We pledge our influence toward a return to the original intent of the First Amendment and toward dispelling the myth of separation of church and state."
Also, Congress should investigate Benghazi. Really.

What I see is, giving choices(liberty) back to the people of the State of Texas, that had been taken away.

Oh? Out of the items listed, what choices(liberty) are those?

I suppose there's the choice of sending your kid for a worthless education at an unregulated, uncertified, unlicensed, non-tested, non-accredited religious school at taxpayer expense. Or the choice of letting them catch a potentially lethal virus.

They all sound like securing the liberty to make a choice for yourself.
Not some government bureaucracy, making the choice for you, or for me.
Liberty.... Learn it and live it.

I'd rep you again if I could, Hesster. This is why no thinking person can vote for a Republican in this day in age.

Got no objections to letting people make their own dietary decisions, as I said in the original post. The stupid part is abolishing laws on how food is produced, distributed and consumed. Or would you prefer not knowing if the food you're buying is good or not? Let's all root for the choice to go back to the days when cows infected with tuberculosis were in the food supply. They're for the choice to buy diseased and improperly stored and prepared food, I guess.

Let's be honest, here. There is no law or penalty against adults not wanting to get a vaccination. They can make that choice if they want, no matter how moronic it may be. This is only for parents who have bought into the anti-vaccination hysteria and think they should be able to send their kids to school unvaccinated. When your own stupid choice puts your kid (and other kids) at risk of catching a potentially lethal virus, it borders on criminal child abuse. Reparative therapy IS abuse. Kids who have been put through it are 10 times more likely to suffer from depression and 8 times more likely to attempt suicide. It's also totally ineffective. It's just a way to siphon money out of gullible parents brainwashed by bigotry and homophobia.

And the First Amendment objection is about taking religious choice away. Or do you really think they're going to give equal weight to all religions (or no religion) after spouting all that crap about God and Judeo-Christian religion?

Securing your liberty to make a choice, is deprivation and abuse?

What world do you live in?

If I want to grow, sell and eat my own food, I should be able to.
Austin was making laws that you could not have gardens and you could not have fresh eggs from chickens.
To force me and you, would make us slaves.

If I don't want a vaccine I should never be forced to get one, nor my children.
To force me and you, would make us slaves.

If someone wants to offer a service to help the community and individuals, and someone wants to use that service, gives everyone a choice. Nothing is forced upon anyone that does not wish to accept it. Is that deprivation and abuse?

Restoring the original message and limits we placed on the government, with the 1st amendment in the Bill of rights, is deprivation and abuse?

Again, what world do you live in?

What the hell?

There is going to be a war in this nation for sure, if choices are all taken and made for you.
