UPDATE: It appears that the cop was being forced to participate in the Parade event it's self, and not to simply protect and serve the patrons. The cop in question is apparently a Motorcycle Cop and was asked to perform choreographed maneuvers for the Gay Parade. He did not refuse the assignment, he simply asked for a new one. It is also worth noting that the Police Chief has marched in past gay parades, so there could be an underlying agenda here.

''SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Salt Lake City police officer has been placed on leave after refusing an assignment to work at a gay pride parade.''

''The officer was among about 30 officers assigned to provide traffic control and security for the annual Utah Pride Parade on Sunday in Salt Lake City, said department spokeswoman Lara Jones.''

Personally I think the cop should have worked it, they are sworn to protect others and parades are events that draw large crowds. People are very vulnerable to attacks, muggings, assaults, rapes etc...at these events. Even if I disagree with the parade it's self its still a matter of public safety. This is not the same as the bakery incidents.

That being said, I think suspending the cop went too far. They should have at just made him/her take a personal day off or something.

I don't have a problem with that. The officer refused an assignment.

Does the cop have an actual case? It would be different if they were trying to make the cop participate in the actual parade event or something, but if it was simply to patrol it for safety and indecent exposure then I don't see it holding up in court.

He deserved suspension.

He hindered police work for personal reason. By not doing his job, someone else had to do it, meaning someone else had to leave their job to do his. This is obstructing police work, which leads to suspension, rather or not the reason is justified. They do this because they need to have cops who can follow orders when they need to.

And why does he care? Working the parade is hardly supporting gay rights. It's just making sure things don't go down hill, or violence. Unless he doesn't care if gay people get hurt, and if that's the case he has no business being a police officer, he shouldn't care. It makes no sense.

He should be FIRED.

Cops can't pick and choose whom they protect. That's outrageous.

This was sarcasm right? You know there is a part in the Oath he took that goes something like this. "To PROTECT and SERVE.
