Honestly, when you have a culture in which a father could so casually slash the throat of his own daughter and the local and government authorities to allow this to happen, how can you deal with a culture like this? It's not Islam - it is that Islam has been hijacked by lunatics who used warped and/or overly literal interpretations of the Koran to support their violent beliefs. Top that off with the horrible lack of education and access to real information among the peasants in that part of the world, and you have the perfect setup to brainwash countless people into being violent minions.
The Church did the same during the Dark Ages, convincing people to kill in the name of Jesus, as horribly absurd as that sounds. They even used the same tactics - warping the word of God, keeping the people ignorant and cut-off from information, etc.
Heck, if you took all of the Bible literally, particularly the laws in the Old Testament, you could create a horrifying theocracy that would be just as bad as what's been created in parts of the Middle East using a warped version of Islam.
