When women lived FREE in Afghanistan: Pictures show how they were once able to study, wear skirts and mix freely with men - before civil war, invasion and the Taliban enslaved them
Mohammad Qayoumi's photos show how free Afghanistan women were before Taliban | Mail Online
How so different Afganistan was before hell broke loose? That was similar to Iraq in the same era as well.

Such a shame. The photos show a Muslim country living in the 20th century while still practicing their faith. Today they practice their faith in an 8th century manner.

Those with money got out. Many immigrated to the US and not all are Muslim. Regardless, this wave of immigrants generally are well educated, wealthy and westernized while continuing to attempt to keep Persian customs. Like with all immigrants,,subsequent generations tend to assimilate.

Attire is the least of the challenges of those unable to leave.

This goes to prove that the western concept that progress is inevitable is false. Everything started going downhill when King Mohammed Zahir Shah was overthrown in 1973 by his cousin, who immediately declared a republic with himself as president. Most of the elite and educated did leave after the Soviet invasion and subsequent civil war. I once interviewed an Afghan man for a sales person position in a major dept store. He didn't list any retail experience on his application so I asked him about his work history. He said that he didn't have retail experience but he had been the Minister of Transportation in the Afghan government! I hired him and he turned out to be an excellent employee.

Here's an interesting image I saw recently.

Titled: Afghan women, casually dressed, use a public library before the Taliban rule (1950s).

Most of the middle east is regressing to medieval times/values. It's sad to see these pictures but its a testament to how quickly extremist religion can completely transform a society for the worse.

So true.

I've met several Afghans or people born here with Afghan parents, and they are usually kind, sweet, mild-mannered people. I feel terrible for people still stuck in that hellhole.

Yes it is so sad for society to change from a progressive country into one that reverts to ancient archaic laws. The sooner the rest of the world gets rid of ancient archaic laws the better it will be.

They took a leap back to the 1st Century! How sad!
