A woman was bitten by a police dog that had escaped from a deputy's patrol car during a routine stop. The dog bit through three layers of clothing and left a three inch hole in her arm. The woman is asking the Sheriff's office to pay for her medical bills that she has incurred from this incident. They refuse to do so claiming that, "the dog escaped from Deputy Cook’s patrol car without his knowledge and that Deputy Cook quickly regained control over the dog once he became aware of the situation. The woman does not want anything to happen to the dog. She just wants to the sheriff department to do the right thing and pay her medical bills. I find this interesting as clearly the Sheriff's department is shirking all responsibility for the bite. It's also interesting in light of all of the dog shootings by police officers that we have been hearing about in the news. A double standard indeed.
She'd win a lawsuit for that pretty easily. Failing to properly secure the police dog in the back of the car is clear negligence. She'll likely sue and they'll quickly settle for a ton more than the medical bills. Were it to go all of the way through to a judgement, they'd most likely lose.
This type of thing happens more than people realize. We've had it happen a few times in our area.
This payment should come from their liability insurance.
Yes. I agree.
If my dog got out of my yard and bit someone I would offer to pay for any medical bills. There would be no question in my mind as clearly, that would be the right thing to do and my way of taking responsibility for my dog. The excuse that the Sheriff's department is giving is inexcusable. It doesn't matter if the cop didn't mean for the dog to get out, the dog got out and bit someone and caused thousands of dollars in medical bills for this person. Why they refuse to pay the bill is beyond comprehension.
If my dog got out and bit a cop, my dog would be dead and I would be responsible for medical bills and I'd probably get ticketed too.

I see no reason to destroy the dog.
The handler needs more training.
I agree....if a privative person's dog bites....animal control is all over ti.
Why were they illegally parking in a handicapped space?
Why would a local woman check into a motel?
Still, just pay the medical bills unless there is evidence of fraud.
Less drama, probably less expensive too.
