When I was a young boy, every family owned a home, people got married, had kids and could afford them.

Now, every community innthis country seems to have a "ghetto" area, race relations are a mess and nobody has amy idea how to make things better. There are so many women having kids out of wedlock its mind boggling. And those fathers, more often than not, don't ever marry the woman they had a child with.

Moreover, what happened to morality? The crimes I read about and the senselessness of them go beyond words. We use to play stick ball in the street. The worst we did was open up old fire hydrants on a hot day in the summer. Now, the crimes are horrific. Teen girls murdering other teens in cold blood because they didn't want be friends anymore.

It's truly sickening. Its amazing how I have seen things get worse over the decades. Where do we go from here? Is our country seeing the sunset on our best days? Or will we be able to rally around eachother and go back to the way things use to be.

Nobody wants to work anymore. These government handouts have done so much to cripple our society. And whats worse is, its like "give a dog a bone," in that, since they have been given so much, I fear we will never be able to force people to work again because they are use to getting things for free.

I don't want to get Political, but this is a major source of resentment that exists acorss the working/non working citizens.

So now what do we do?

My family never owned a home. And my mom had kids she couldn't afford because she was catholic and didn't use birth control. Where did you grow up......Mayberry. Sorry, but your portrait of america is just not realistic.

Yes, similar to Mayberry. Like much of this country was in the 50s.

What year was the OP a kid? Funny thing about this idea is everyone thinks life was better back when they were a kid because they were kids and not involved in grown up issues.

For me, the 80's and early 90s were amazing because I was a kid. That doesn't mean things were better in the world, it just means I wasn't aware of what was going on in the world at the time.

What happened was normalizing and even promoting crap inappropriate behavior in all sectors of life. People, business, government etc. For some reason, standards became verboten if even one person got their feelings hurt, and business and government became things to further a short term agenda rather than the good of society on the whole.

This is certainly a more common issue. However, the home ownership is probably not true. I guess, I don't know how old you are, nor does it really matter. But generally, people who lived in the cities, not the suburbs, didn't own homes. And there has always been plenty of people there. That's not to imply they were all poor, but they still weren't home owners. And ghettos have always existed. They were very common in the 1930 (great depression). There's probably some kind of connection to be had there.

As for the wedlock thing... I don't know if that's always a bad thing or a good thing. I mean, marriage isn't necessary for child development, just a stable household. I tend to agree, ideally its a mom and dad family, but just because it's ideal doesn't mean that's the only working solution. I know many people who are in a single parent household, and really, it's not as bad as people make it out to be. It can be tough, but generally, every person I know who was raised by a single mother turned out fine. As for fathers not marrying... not a big deal. They need to take responsibility, but if they won't be happy with marriage, it's probably for the best.

And to address race relations: when were they good? 1980s to early 2000s? I think that's when it was at its best and even then it was hardly perfect.

I don't believe violent crimes are more common now. The media, which used to be about journalism, just loves reporting the juicy stories about violence.

How much do you think a welfare recipient gets? It's not a lot and not really a life I'd want to get used to. People do need to have work ethics though. The issue is with schools telling everyone that they're winners. The self esteem movement. It was a waste of time. Self esteem doesn't make people smarter or reduce crimes. Turns out, killers tend to think very highly of themselves. Stop worshiping kids. Don't hide things from them. That's where it needs to start.

It's a political issue, so you better want to get political. As for what to do... see above. Starts at education. The adults are realistically a lost cause.

Best theory I have seen so far, thanks.

There has never been such time in US, or any other country. Maybe in the eyes of a young boy it seemed that way, but it simply was not the case.
