What does that have to do with the writing assignment the teacher had? This wasn't just some random thing this kid wrote on his own Facebook page?

When will we find the time to teach kids to read?
Are you sure? I haven't seen the writing assignment and if it caused the teacher to be alarmed, then I am guessing there was rules to the assignment.

Quite the assumption you are making, to be a teacher these days you need to have a Masters Degree in most schools. I am willing to bet the teacher has a higher I than you are willing to credit them with.

I can only assume you would home school your hypothetical children?

What "warning signs"?

He could also "potentially" find the cure for cancer in the future except he can't get accepted into any university now or get scholarships or find a decent paying job because some teacher over reacted when he was 16 and had him arrested for shooting an extinct animal in a fictional story.

Yes, that's the way to show him who's boss.

The level of paranoia is astounding to me.

For not having read the assignment you seem to make a pretty definitive statement on it.

You have to ask the teacher that question because the teacher was the one that brought attention to the potential warning sign.

Also, the student wasn't arrested for what he wrote, you must have missed that when reading the article.

I can only base it off what the teacher said and has acted. If this was a general fictional writing assignment, then I don't see why the teacher needed to bring attention to this.

I read the article and he was arrested for disorderly conduct as a result of his doing the assignment as the teacher stated.

He probably wouldn't have been arrested had he not been disorderly, that has nothing to do with the writing assignment

Well chicken and egg. He wouldn't have been subjected to a ridiculous search of his locker and bookbag if the teacher didn't overreact and the principal didn't call the cops. I think most of the people here are saying the same thing - why didn't school first try to employ common sense in this incident?
