Since Illinois started granting concealed carry permits this year, the number of robberies that have led to arrests in Chicago has declined 20 percent from last year, according to police department statistics. Reports of burglary and motor vehicle theft are down 20 percent and 26 percent, respectively. In the first quarter, the city’s homicide rate was at a 56-year low.

“It isn’t any coincidence crime rates started to go down when concealed carry was permitted. Just the idea that the criminals don’t know who’s armed and who isn’t has a deterrence effect,” said Richard Pearson, executive director of the Illinois State Rifle Association. “The police department hasn’t changed a single tactic — they haven’t announced a shift in policy or of course — and yet you have these incredible numbers.”

Chicago doesn't really deserve the benefits of conservative policy, but it is getting it nonetheless.

LOL at you OP, you really think criminals keep up to date on concealed carry laws?

LOL. Crime rises and falls in waves. And it is odd that you are pointing out the lowering crime when all I hear about in the media about Chicago at times are the continues "shootings" and how many people were shot in a weekend.

Give me a break!

The Chicago Police Department has credited better police work as a reason for the lower crime rates this year. Police Superintendent Garry F. McCarthy noted the confiscation of more than 1,300 illegal guns in the first three months of the year, better police training and “intelligent policing strategies.”

Or it could be that the police just started hitting the pavement more at the end of last year due to so much crime, and there has been a steady decline since.

Most criminals don't care about concealed weapons permits. We still have violent crime in Tennessee, and we've had concealed carry for as long as I remember.

Guns are already everywhere in the hood. Concealed carry doesn't affect people who didn't care about laws to begin with.

Righties think that criminals just need to be scared of getting shot at and they'll stop committing crimes. They already are.

Applications doesn't mean they were granted or used to stop the crimes.

This is basic statistics on correlation.

Shoe size and reading ability are also correlated...does that mean bigger feet shows you are smarter?
The decline in pirates is correlated with the rise of global warming...does that mean pirates cool the Earth?

This isn't hard or in the weeds...this is stats 101. People should know this as the most basic idea of stats.

The quotations used by the article were from the head of the Illinois national rifle association. Of course he is going to draw this correlation. Forget about the extra police work that had this effect. It must be all of the guns on the street. Yeah right.

Criminals aren't completely stupid. For decades they have been given a safe hunting ground to prey on defenseless victims. Now that some potential victims have teeth, even the low-life animals are looking for a safer line of work.

It's going to be funny watching the professional butt-hurt try to spin this one. What do you bet the excuses include "better policing", "improving economy", "better schools"? Anything but the truth.

Apparently it's not just a "Conservative" thingy as you preach. Wasn't it Vice-President Biden who brandished his shotgun? There's nothing wrong with having a concealed weapon for protecting yourself, your family, or your property.

I don't care about Chicago or its crime rate or why it may be declining. But are people actually interested in statistics now? I mean we are starting to understand statistics? Becuase I've got some statistics (from the .gov) on crime rates by race that I would love to discuss. Along with school achievement by race and STD infections by race, etc. If we're all into statistics and all.
