all this indicates to me is that the patents on R134a are running out, and hfo1234yf patents are just now starting to take effect. this is what happened with R12. the patents ran out, so dupont decided not to fight to keep R12 on the market. and the price of R12 started to rise substantially. the same thing is going to happen with R134a in about ten years. it will be banned from production, and subsequently the price will start to rise quickly. and kits to convert R134a systems to the new refrigerant will hit the market, and the companies making the kits will rake in a bundle by using scare tactics, like they did with R12, not to mention the a/c shops that will also rake in a bundle by doing the conversions, and not only charging a ton for labor, but also by adding 30% to the cost of the conversion kit.
But the cost of repairing the AC unit will be more than the car. That's why I went with more expensive AC coils in my home units that work with my existing freon and will work with the new coolant when my compressor fails.
Last year, freon was about $90/lb. This year it was about $150/lb. By next year they were estimating $200 to $300/lb and the cost to recharge my units would have been the same as getting my coils replaced. Yes, I'm still using freon but it was saved during the coil swap out.
I have a 10 year old AC unit in my house and it has never needed any refrigerant. I spend much more on just filters.

It's called "liberalism creep." First they hated Freon, so the replacement became R-134A. Now they hate the replacement.
It's just like their outrage over paper bags. The horror of cutting down trees was more than they could bear. So the replacement became plastic bags. Now they hate the replacement and are actively seeking "plastic bag taxes" all across the country to curb usage.
What else will they hate next?

I'd say its more about the money than "outrage". Some lobbyist came up with this idea.
Older cars will be grandfathered. Very few vehicles were converted from R-12. Stop whining.

I would need to see proof that any refrigerant, or CO2, or methane, or water vapor, or any other "greenhouse gas" contributes to asthma.
Years ago, evaporative coolers were used in vehicles. However, they add water vapor to the air, so that isn't a good idea either.
Propane is an excellent refrigerant, but, of course, it is explosive.
