Race and the Modern GOP - Doug McAdam and Karina Kloos - POLITICO Magazine

Found this Politico article that was very well written.

Quote:
Many will blame today’s unprecedented political polarization on recent events, such as the rise of the Tea Party or Obama’s election in 2008, but they will be wrong. The seeds of America’s dysfunction were planted 50 years ago. And the ugly politics of race had everything to do with it.
Quote:
In short, the essence of today’s GOP—overwhelming white and disproportionately Southern—was evident by the late 1960s.
3 pages of article, I don't imagine anyone will read more than the first page, but it highlights the myth that the modern GOP is the party of anti-racism, and that the Democratic Party is the party of racism. Let's put that revisionist history to rest

I read most of it. There is some interesting and relevant information about geography and changing election results. But it says nothing about policies advanced by either party. It says nothing about why people vote for one party or another today. I don't find the premise of the article compelling or remotely convincing to explain the divisiveness of politics today. It ignores immigration, larger cities, information technology vs. rural living etc.

So clearly the common sense data presented in the article went over your head.

Race controls every facet of politics in America.

whites vote 40/60 to 50/50 D and R... What is the split between R & D for minorities? Perspective is everything... Think about it then come back and talk about race

Well I figured with the GOP being in charge of education and social policy for the past 50 years they could have fixed everything by now.

Interesting.

Time to stop pitting humans against each other by using "race" categories, and start seeing the truth about divisions in this country.

It has always been about class and economics.

Always.

Race is the myth that is used to spin the truth out of control and keep people at each other's throats.

The poor of either "race/ethnic" category don't stand a chance up against the social elite, however, that yardstick is always used to divide people.

It doesn't serve either party to stop classifying people in terms of "race", it benefits them.

If you read the whole article, you would have seen the graph.

90% of votes cast for the GOP came from white voters, while it was 60% for the Democrats. 2% of blacks voted for the GOP, while 22% voted for the Democrats.

Yes, perspective is everything. Why would blacks vote for a party that constantly insults them and belittles them, and has a clear history of supporting white racists post Civil Rights Act? Which party was it that embraced disenfranchised white racist voters?

GOP. RACE. RACIST. RACISM. RACE. RACIST. RACISM. RACE. RACIST. RACISM. RACE. RACIST. RACISM.

GOP. RACE. RACIST. RACISM. RACE. RACIST. RACISM. RACE. RACIST. RACISM. RACE. RACIST. RACISM.

GOP. RACE. RACIST. RACISM. RACE. RACIST. RACISM. RACE. RACIST. RACISM. RACE. RACIST. RACISM.

Seems to be the topic of most every liberal post anymore. Who is it with RACE on their minds at all times?

Sorry, but it doesn't work that way. We can't keep ignoring the fact that racism is still alive and well in America. Racism won't go away if you look the other way or bury your head in the sand. The fact that many people in your ethnic group still think themselves as racially superior to others is very telling.

Does it bother you that the GOP's comfortable relationship with racists is now out in the open for all to see? then do something about it, pretending that racism only exists in the political sphere will not make it go away. Just because most whites have not experienced the kind of racism their fellow countrymen spew out on a frequent basis, does not mean racism doesn't exist
