Out of a number of developed countries I've been to on several continents, I notice that the US is quite unique in that it is a very sexually repressed country. I mean, people are not comfortable with the subject of sexuality and the role it plays as an integral aspect and necessity of life.

Why is this?

America has been the "come to" country for the last century. When immigrants, including my family, come over here, they retain the old ways and think the country they left behind is frozen in time. America is still relatively a young immature country that is just starting to feel a bit old after moving out of adolescence.

To us in America, we think we are really progressive vs the abandoned countries. On the other hand, the abandoned countries have are old, matured, stable base and move forward knowing they are old and matured and view their sexuality accordingly. Like dirty old men.

I totally agree, I'm not sure why our society is like that. It seems so prissy & virginized. There's a commercial that I've only seen a couple times.. it's for I think K-Y Jelly. Anyway, the commercial has this couple sitting on the bed talking to the camera & then all of a sudden, they discover the jelly & the next shot is the two of them under the covers all disheveled. When I first saw that commercial I was like, holy crap! That's pretty risque for american commercials! It seemed like a commercial you would see in Europe. Don't get me wrong, I was all for it, but then I just knew that some christian group was going to come out of the woodwork & protest that commercial....speaking of that, I haven't seen that commercial in probably a month. So, that's just one example of many of how this society is. I don't understand it, I don't get it, I have no clue, but unfortunately that's how it is. People....sex is not bad, it's FUN!!!

HEE! "Like dirty old men". You phrased it well.

Odd to see someone posting that America is "sexually repressed"; it looks to me as though sex is pretty much all over the place, constantly being talked about and sung about and used to sell things. OP, are you referring to the fact that explicit sexuality is not usually shown on primetime TV, or what? I mean, when comedy shows are doing sketches about Oprah's "vajayjay", and the hip thing awhile back was for starlets and wannabes to flash their naughty bits at paparazzi while getting out of cars, I'm thinking...not so repressed.

I obviously define it differently than you do. Compared to China, for instance, the US is one big porno shop; their popular culture is pretty G-rated. Hop over to Japan, OTOH, and the US looks pretty tame. To me, it's a very relative thing, but you seem to be defining your terms differently. What constitutes "sexual repression" for you, OP? (Not being snotty, just asking.)

And it's true: Sex IS fun. MUCH better than some of the other hobbies I've tried.

Maybe there is money in the USA's sexual repression. Is there money made repressing? Promoting?

Would Spitzer have paid a couple grand if prostitution was legal? Is wild sexual escapade a domain of the rich here in the USA? If it were all around us and free, how much could entrepreneurs charge?

I don't know what you're talking about ...sex is everywhere !!

You think people should have sex on street corners to prove they're not sexually repressed??????

I think the church has unfortunately been allowed to have a more-than-is-healthy influence in this area...

Instead of "repressed," I might use the word "schizophrenic."

On one hand, we have people pushing for "abstinence-only" education and trying to limit condom distributions to highschoolers, because anything else would "encourage teen sex." We have people panicking at the sight of a bare nipple, because kids might have seen it. Nude beaches are seen as havens of freakery.

On the other hand, these same kids who were supposedly "scandalized" by the Super Bowl's halftime show are cruising the internet for hardcore porn, engaging in various sex acts with other kids their age, and are quite aware of the need to keep that stuff to themselves, and not talk about it to these crazy adults, who act like their children have never seen human nudity before.

The result of that schizophrenia is the highest teen pregnancy and abortion rate in the developed world.
