Let's say, for example, that a sitting US president was trying to drum up support for a sketchy piece of legislation. And let's say that that same US president LIED and INVENTED A STORY about how his mother was denied insurance at the end of her life because she had cancer. Wouldn't that be terrible? LYING and INVENTING A STORY about your dead mother, just to push a sketchy piece of legislation through? That is NOT fine, now is it?
And what if a super reputable media outlet -- say, The Washington Post -- called that same president who had LIED and INVENTED A STORY about his dead mother and said "Hey, listen, we know that you LIED and INVENTED A STORY about your dead mother. We'll give you a chance to retract it before we call you on it." And let's say that The Washington Post really liked that president.....would you think that's a smear campaign?
