I disagree. It should be set at the lowest minimum that keeps working Americans above the poverty level.
I disagree. If you want to live above the poverty level, get education and training to improve yourself and make yourself more marketable. When you become of more value to Society, you can expect to make more money.
You can pay for a 1 bedroom apartment, food, water, electric, health insurance, bus pass in a city or cheap car and insurance in the country, internet, Cell phone (oddly in the modern age this and the internet really are basics-especially if you are looking for work). And you can watch 1 movie a month, and go out to eat twice in a month at someplace cheap while working 40 hours a week....All without any state help.
When the minimum wage was half of what it was today that was doable on it. Today it is not.
And so what if its for unskilled workers....did you know there used to be really well paying unskilled labor jobs that paid well because they were physically demanding? Today...those pay minimum wage. as time goes by the definition of who minimum wage is for is slowly changing......

Working full time hours should get you pay above the poverty level, moving higher above the poverty level to more comfortable living, that is on the individual. When people make pay that is below the poverty level, it is the tax payers that pick up that tab to help those individuals to stay out of deep poverty.
If you want less people to be relying on tax payer money, then the pay for full time workers needs to be above the poverty level.
Paying someone 50 cents more than federal minimum wage isn't really something to brag about.
