Alabama is the most Republican and Washington state the most Democratic state, according to new rankings from The Hill.

The Hill looked at voting trends and history in all 50 states to find the most secure Republican and Democratic strongholds, and which states appear to be up for grabs.

How red or blue is your state? | TheHill

I'm from Washington, and while it's undoubtedly solidly blue, I find it hard to believe it's more Democratic than Massachusetts, the state I would name if put on the spot and asked to name the most Democratic state.

I live in Washington State and I've lived in Boston. I think Washington is more blue. Boston elected Mitt Romney, Scott Brown and could possibly elect another Republican governor in two weeks. In Washington, Rob McKenna, a Republican, managed to be AG for WA and ran for governor. Then he jumped into the Obamacare lawsuit and spoke at a Tea Party rally in Olympia. He lost.

WA is largely red outside of the Seattle-Tacoma area. IIRC when Republican Sen. Slade Gorton lost in 2000, he won something like 34 of 39 counties, but he lost the race. Of course the Seattle area has most of the population.

But the deciding factor in making WA the bluest state might be just how far to the left Seattleites are. Jim McDermott (D, WA) is one of the furthest left house members, and routinely wins re-election by 70-80 percent. In Seattle, the Democrats are actually the right-wing party. The socialists and greens are the left side of the aisle.

There is still a kind of strange libertarian (for lack of a better term) streak in WA. An attempt to enact a state income tax in 2010 went down resoundingly (65-35 IIRC) in 2010.

Washington is very much a red-diaper, Communistic state.............mainly due to the influence of the coastal areas and big cities. But it is KINDA balanced-out by the angry Teabillies/Trailerbillies in the Eastern half of the state...and some of the outlying towns all over WA,

The state Senate in WA is effectively controlled by Republicans. Senate republicans came up with a brilliant plan to create a coalition between Republicans and several conservative Dems. They offered one conservative Dem the chance to be majority leader, and he took it. He was a former R who had switched to the D party. He is retiring, but the GOP will probably keep control of the state senate anyway.

The GOP coalition was able to stop great mischief by the Dems, who wanted to raise taxes.

The amount of land that is red doesn't matter, voting only counts population and the majority of people in Washington live in the Puget Sound. The Northwest, it is pretty much a combination of Liberal-Libertarian.
