The sole reason for the .22 shortage and other calibers was Sandy Hook massacre. Prior to that it was available everywhere. People panic bought, flippers bought en mass and resold on auction sites, it was common for some to wait in the early morning at Walmart and wipe out inventory so they could resell on gun broker.
Now even as ammo becomes available again it is doubled in price thanks to all this.
One of my biggest fears is democrats like Obama creating import bans, I have some odd ball military relics like the Argentine 1909 for example and about the only reasonable priced clean non corrosive ammo I can get for it is Privi Partisan brand made in eastern Europe.
Panic buying last year ("they are coming for our guns!") has died off and gun stores are left holding unsold inventory. Lobbyists need to poke their political puppets and talk radio shills to get the fear level back up.
Last year Sturm, Ruger CEO Michael Fifer complained about retailers placing "grossly unrealistic" orders with his company. Fifer called out "that guy with $25,000 worth of credit line hoping he's going to get $100 million worth of product before the surge ended."
Could be worse....buyers could have thrown money away on iPhones that will be obsolete in 6 months and tosed in the trash in a year.
Actually people trade them in when they get a new one, and no, they are not obsolete in 6 months. A lot of people still use IPhone 4 which came out in 2010.

I'd venture to say that in all ikelihood, people buying smartphones get more use out of their purchases than those who hoard firearms.
Not that it matters overly much - the ammosexuals put some money in circulation (good for the ol' economy) and they're not markedly more dangerous with 12 guns than with 1, so there's really no reason to fret.
Since the Zombie shows like The Walking Dead have been on, I believe the 22 is the preferred gun of amateur Zombie Killers.
I did find out that Walmart hides boxes under the counter so you just have to ask.
They had to. All the small gun shops were sending their flunkys to Walmart, the morning of delivery, and buying up all the 22lr at 15.00 a box of 500 and reselling it at 39.00.

Christmas should be good this year with all the overstock of oil & guns.
