With that kind of pay and so little education/qualification required, I am sure there are tons of competition.

Most definitely. And at least in Philadelphia, it was always easier to get in if you're father/uncle/etc was a firefighter.

But nowadays, being a "legacy" is almost a hindrance.

Like any government job, politics are far more important than qualifications

Cops maybe "fat" but they aren't exactly not in shape. As long as they are able to deal with the physical aspects of the job, who cares if they are "fat" or not. As for this being a recent thing, it isn't. I watch the utterly racist and non-politically correct Dick Tracy show as a kid, one of the cops was a hefty Irish cop who tried to steal food from an outside food mart when he would get his contact from Tracy. And this was from the 1940s.

fat coppers are an embarrassment and I wont work with one.. because they potentially put my life at risk

fat coppers poorly represent themselves and the department.. they have a lack of pride

fat coppers dont live long after retirement.. estimates are they die within a very short time.. months

fat coppers cost all of us more money..because of health issues that come with obesity... they arent normally as aggresive.. they arent shaking cars all night.. they cant fit in their vests or uniforms and look like bloated doughnut holes.. most of them gravitate towards admin positions

getting out of a car and getting into a fight for your life generally is not something fat people want.. except Butterbean.. hes badass

Usually fat police were fat in the academy and just made it .. we all know the ones that fell out of the academy runs or sweated like porkhogs

I dont like fat people in general.. not just coppers

If my life.. my retirement.. my family depends upon me.. Im working out every day.. and I have for my entire adult life.. because there is always someone stronger... faster... badder... with nothing to lose on the other side of me.. which is why I have to be smarter

The City Of Los Angeles mayor recently threw out the fire department's recruit class because the online application process was open for one minute and a high percentage of those who got through were relatives of city fire fighters.

On top of the vast amount of people seeking government work with benefits, outfits such as the US Postal Service also have similar time restrictions on just giving out applications more politically sensitive "glamour" jobs like police and fire fighting also have ethnic and gender workforce goals placed upon the departments by politicians.
