I know it seems ghoulish, but I know several parents who have insurance policies on their children that would pay for funerals if the unthinkable happened. My brother has a policy like that for his son (< 10 years old).

My wishes are laid out clearly in my will and the money is there to pay for it. Unlike most Jews, I want to donate every piece of me that can be donated, then be cremated and my ashes scattered. I don't see the point in hermetically sealing my corpse in a vault and putting it in the ground. I think it's kind of stupid. It goes against the grain of what most Jews do, but hey...oh well.

You can rent a nice casket for the viewing and funeral and then be creamated. That is all that is needed.

There still has to be a small vault.

Always check with the sexton.
Vaults are only used either when its above ground or when the underground water level is not deep enough to meet the legal depth for that state. In NY a ground vault is not required, but can be requested if one does not want to dig a deep hole.

As far as I know all cemeteries in Michigan require a vault.

I just read online that one should get bids from 3 funeral homes and cemeteries and make sure the providers know you are shopping. Most people don't. Can't imagine loosing a child and going into comparison shopping mode.

Funerals are for the living.
Add a headstone and the base price can easily go over $10, 000.

I've always read that you don't buy life insurance on your kids. (Some people do.) Just buy enough insurance to bury them.

There is no reason for the funeral to cost $9K. My MIL died and hers was only $3200. That was for the ceremony and cremation. As someone else said, it is more want than need.

It depends on the state.

Dead bodies are not inherently disease ridden or a public health problem.

Vaults are not required by law in Michigan but most cemeteries (voluntarily) require them.

I don't see why a child's would be any cheaper.

I don't see why it would be close to 3k more expensive.

Sorry to say, but I suspect a money grab.
