Today's liberals are spineless idiots. They are not set in the same mold of liberals who would never have tolerated intolerant ideas as "equal" to the secular west prerogative! Today's liberals make excuse for burkas and female genital mutilation for petesake! It's maddening.
They do not fathom the ability to attack Islam as an IDEA - a political and social IDEA - that SHOULD be attacked as vehemently as any other oppressive ideology, as incompatible with secular humanist goals.
Liberals can understand how Judeo-Christian mores are often incompatible with freedom. They will mock it, they will go after Christianists who express abhorrent ideology, but for some reason do not understand that Islam is just as - if not often violently more so! When France was fighting over gay marriage, it was the Islamic community that joined forces with the Catholics to oppose it!
I suppose the expectation is that because Islam is a "minority religion" in the west, its adherents will extoll the virtues of pluralism once the numbers are great enough to actually vote on things that matter to liberals. (Which has seen gains in personal and expressive freedoms only as (Christian) religiosity has FALLEN over the decades).
Sigh... here we go again. Does anyone here look at biographical history? Ever?
McVeigh and Hitler were not Christians. They were born into Catholic households, but later basically became agnostic. So they were not Christian, and their motives were not based in religion.
As to Nichols, documentation states he converted in jail... which can only mean that prior he was not Christian.
What's next, Stalin and Mussolini were good Christians and not atheists? Good grief...
If you don't like the examples you are welcome to use Pat Robertson and Mike Huckabee instead.
Liberals are automatically on the side of whomever wants to tear down the White, European culture. The culture of freedom, art, science and technology. The culture that put men on the moon and satellites in orbit. The culture that has developed the medical knowledge that has improved so many lives. But they would tear it all down because they aren't successful enough in it.
A few prefaces: first of all, I understand that not everyone on the left is sympathetic towards Islam. Second, this thread isn't an attempt to troll; it is an honest question I have wondered for years. Third, this thread is not intended to be a place to debate the merits of various religions. My purpose is to solicit the opinion of people self-identified to the left of center as to how and why they have developed their positions regarding Islam.
Why is it that the political left is often so sympathetic to Islam? From the research I have done about Islam (several college courses including three semesters of Arabic, numerous books, documentaries and being a news junky) the political left and Islam have virtually nothing in common. In fact, many of the tenets of Islam are diametrically opposed to the values held by the left (homosexuality, women's rights, pacifism vs. violence, the role of religion in government, etc.). When there is an issue in the news that pits Islam against Christianity or Judaism, the left sides with Islam the vast majority of the time.
The left has condemned the Paris tragedy, but these condemnations usually include qualifiers about how not all Muslims are bad (which we already know) or how not all terrorists are Muslims (even though the VAST majority of modern terrorists are Muslims). Instead of talking constructively about ways to reduce Islamic fanaticism, liberal media outlets seem to spend more time sympathizing with a group that perpetrates violence in response the the values the left holds most dear.
All insight is appreciated. As someone that is not left-wing, this is something that completely baffles me.
Liberals are not sympathetic to Islam, that's just the lie bigots tell themselves.
The rest of this discussion is just a repeat of a repeat of a repeat.
What liberals see IS bigotry against all Muslims, coming from a lot of right wingers.
What liberals see is that kind of bigotry worsening the problems of normal Muslims making their lives more difficult, resulting in a vicious cycle.
What liberals see is you can't defeat a religion or religious beliefs with guns and bullets and they see idiots saying this is a religious struggle which really a call for infinite war or genocide. Neither a good choice.
But Islam the religion is unpopular with liberals.
Also, what liberals see is that western governments have found a perpetual fear machine that then justifies those governments taking all kinds of liberties.
What liberals see is these same governments basically saying any criticism of their actions in Islamic nations, any acknowledgement that many Westetn nations have done things that have made things worse in the middle east, that those governments need to change policy in some areas is the same as support of terrorism.
So again many western governments have the perfect thing going. They keep doing stuff in the Middle East to excerbate problems, then turn around say criticizing those policies is tantamount to support of terrorists, and then when terrorists attacks in part because of those policies, those same governments get to go to their populations and say these Muslims are crazy, can't he reasoned with, are going to destroy us if the government doesn't do a bunch of horrendous policies which put even more control over their own citizens.
It's the same garbage pump that fear pump that fear, use that fear to carry out stupid policies.
