MLK day was created by Ronald Regan in 1983 and is our newest big holiday. I noticed that more and more people have the day off. I just saw a headline that this year the number is at an all time high (37 percent). King was a great uniter who dreamed of judging people for who they are and not what they look like.

On Easter we have bunnies, on Labor Day we have sales, on Independence Day we have barbecues and fireworks. We need something for MLK Day. Personally, I think we need a day that features lasagna. We could also start a tradition of giving a gift to someone of a different background, or belief system. Or we could just have more sales... But I say no to that. So what should we do for the Doctor's day?

Well, some idiots in Boston decided to chain themselves to barrels in the middle of a busy freeway, so there's that new "tradition." (Maybe Soros is funding these Darwin award winners too?)

But I have a feeling MLK would agree these people are idiots.

No he wouldn't. He would be right there with the other revs Sharpton and Jackson.

But I thought Ronald Reagan was a inveterate racist who hated poor people. Why would he create a new holiday knowing that working people might get that day off and then dedicate the day to a black man?

Reagan didn't want MLK to have a holiday. In fact, I remember that he called MLK a communist. Both the Senate and House were overwhelmingly Democratic back then. They shamed Reagan into creating the new holiday for MLK.

You remember wrong.

Reagan on MLK in 1983: America is a more democratic nation, a more just nation, a more peaceful nation because Martin Luther King, Jr., became her preeminent nonviolent commander. Martin Luther King, Jr., and his spirit live within all of us. Thank God for the blessing of his life and his leadership and his commitment. What manner of man was this? May we make ourselves worthy to carry on his dream and create the love community.

Reagan originally opposed the holiday citing cost concerns. He changed his mind when it passed overwhelmingly in the House.

The idea was initially pushed in the 1970s, introduced by a Democrat (John Conyers) and a Republican (Edward Brooke) but didn't go anywhere. The successful legislation of 1983 originated with Democrat Katie Hall of Indiana.
