Like it or not, Rev Al is one of the most prominent and recognizable faces speaking for all of black society. He's the one who gets the TV time, whether you agree with him or not.
Just wondering what % of blacks actually agree with him or just see him as a race baiting media ***** only interested in getting face time on TV and lining his pockets?
It seems (especially on CityData) whites think of him WAY more often than blacks do.
I have a white friend in the NYPD and he mentions Al Sharpton more than anyone I know.
Probably because Al spends most of his time making political or racial attacks.
Kinda like some of the knuckleheads that always carp about about the misdeeds of blacks or rotten liburals might catch the notice of blacks and democrats.
People pay attention to people that essentially attack them day after day. It's human nature.
I've never understood for example how anybody could listen to Rush Limbaugh, Bill Maher, Glenn Beck etc....and was really shocked at how many from the OTHER party listened to them.

The obsession is strange. And it IS an obsession for white conservatives. They're apparently fishing for one of two things:
1) Blacks to give him their undying devotion and support.
2) Blacks to come on the thread and literally BEG these conservatives not to lump them in with Sharpton's supporters and you must protest about how Sharpton isn't important, doesn't speak for all blacks, blah, blah blah...

I hope this is not true in the sense that black folks see him in such a manner.
As you pointed out, he is a race baiter who shows up whenever there is a TV camera and somehow gets air time. Embarrassing, and in my mind, not at all representative of the majority of the black community.
What is he doing which is constructive, productive and not self aggrandizing between "racial episodes"? Nobody is writing articles about a fine gentleman who is quietly making great strides to make society a better place for all participants.
