At the moment it looks like Ferguson will be the poster child for racist policy. Hopefully this leads to more investigation and displacement of these types of systemic injustice.

There is no way I will believe that Ferguson had so few qualified black applicants for the job of police officer. Our civil servant work force should reflect the population in which they serve. I don't believe in affirmative action as a rule. I do believe that all efforts should be made to be fair in hiring practices.
How do black people feel that they are fairly represented by police when so few are allowed to become police officers?
I work in an industry where recruiting is a problem. The reasons are not about lack of qualified candidates but lack of visibility.

When the most common sources of employees are referrals from existing employees and recruiting from a small list of schools you get the same results. It wouldn't be hard to add more schools to your recruiting list. Or reach out to industry groups targeting diverse audiences and starting with a broader pool.

Better outcomes will follow. That is not "unfair" or discriminatory.

To use a shopping example, you can't know the corner store doesn't have what you need if you.ve never even gone in.

As I saidabove, they are not "refusing to raise taxes". It is illegal in Missouri for a city to raise taxes. Has been for over 30 years.

There are over 60 other police departments within 25 miles of Ferguson paying higher salaries to Ferguson for black police officers. Many of these pay signing bonuses to black officers that are more than six months salary as a Ferguson officer and at least the upper half are paying more than double a Ferguson salary.

Why would a black officer work in Ferguson?

Why would anyone work as an officer in Ferguson?

Hearing about some of the issues there made me sick. But honestly, I'm sure there's stories like that all over this country. They just get swept under the rug.

McCullough's been reprimanded by his fellow lawyers, the mayor and gov are in hot water, and it was still never proven that Darren Wilson was justified in the shooting.

We have issues as a country. People's lives are being ruined, hurt, or worse.

Justice Department Preparing Racial Discrimination Lawsuit Against Ferguson Police: Report
I see nothing of note here. DOJ says Ferguson should imement changes. Ferguson says they will. Generalized claim of police targeting minorities with no specifics or evidence presented.

Obviously Darren Wilson was justified in shooting Michael Brown. Black racists continue to look for racism yo validate their failures in life, just like White racists do.

Yaaaawn.

If applicants aren't capable or motivated enough to apply, are they really the kind of people your company wants?
