'White History Month' sign stirs up Flemington | NJ.com

I dont agree that this is necessary as every month is white history month, and it was probably meant spark a reaction, but the guy has a right to put the sign in his store window. I don't agree with the guy who went to the police, and then the county prosecutors office to try to get the sign forcibly removed. The words on the sign do not say anything inherently racist. Those feelings are an internal product of the person reading the sign, and that can occur with many statements one can make, no matter how benign. If someone doesn't like the sign, they should buy their food somewhere else. I would fully support a boycott by anyone who is offended, but legal action? Really?

Why should he be boycotted?

What is so offensive about a sign that says "White History month" that you would boycott over ?

"Every month is white history month" is just a standard politically correct response to complaints about black history month. Black history month isn't just about examining black history, it's about celebrating it. If it were just about an objective focus on black history, then "every month is white history month" would be correct. But given the celebratory element of black history month, that makes the quote wrong.

From African American History :

The Library of Congress, National Archives and Records Administration, National Endowment for the Humanities, National Gallery of Art, National Park Service, Smithsonian Institution and United States Holocaust Memorial Museum join in paying tribute to the generations of African Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve full citizenship in American society.

So does every month pay tribute to the generations of White Americans who struggled with adversity to achieve those things that they have achieved in American society? Nope. Just because most historical figures have been white does not make every month white history month. Balancing chemical formulas requires doing math so does that mean that chemistry classes are mathematics classes? No. Black history month is specifically targeted to be about blacks. It's not just that most people discussed during black history month happen to be black. They are specifically targeted as black people. Black history month carries the message that being black gives you a heritage to be proud of. Other months give you a message that being American gives you a heritage to be proud of, but not that being white gives you any heritage to be proud of. So therefore, the fact that most historical figures happen to be white does not make every month white history month. The key factor here is that the person's race is not being celebrated in a regular history class. Nobody celebrates George Washington as a white person, they just celebrate him as a person. White children are not encouraged to be curious about George Washington or proud of George Washington because he was white.

Now don't take this to mean that I support having a white history month. I do not. However, I do take exception to the "every month is white history month" argument. There is nobody out there telling white kids to be proud of being white the way there is encouragement out there for black kids to be proud of being black.

Meh...racial pride is lame anyway.

Never understood why people are proud of characteristics that are not of their choosing.

Why limit a specific type of history to a month? And isn't black history just American history? They may bring un Nelson Mandela, but I doubt that black history includes many famous black people who weren't American.

Any type of history month is pretty silly in my opinion.

So I don't care. White history month is equally pointless, more so since whites haven't had much of a struggle as a whole. At least black people had to deal with some type of hardship; white people realistically did not.

So racial history months can only be used by races that had "struggles" in America ?

I'm not saying he should be or shouldn't be boycotted. I am not offended by the sign, so I would not boycott the store. I may have worded it poorly. I said I would support boycotting the store, so I would see how that would be misconstrued. What I meant by that is that I support people's right to boycott if they are offended, the same way I support the store owner's right to put up the sign. Free speech all around.
